In 2001, Mattel’s iconic fashion doll, Barbie, leapt from the toy aisle onto home video shelves for the animated movie, Barbie in the Nutcracker. The film – loosely based on E. T. A. Hoffman’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King – was a hit with its target audience (young Barbie fans) and led to a follow-up.
