 Show Level Best route Portland Oregon to Phoenix AZ 14 years ago We have used only I-5 south and I-10 east. We were on a plane and someone told us there is a shorter route between the two cities...said something about going through Las Vegas and saving 3-4 hours. Anyone know the quickest route from Portland to Phoenix???

Via Las Vegas you have a slightly shorter trip but spend a bit more time due to non-freeway type roads and hitting LV traffic. My choice would be via LV solely for a change of scenery. We just drove 395 south through CA, for that purpose.

Here's the route we took: I-5 from Sutherlin south to Redding, then hwy 44/395 over Lassen into Susanville and then Reno; Reno to Las Vegas via 395; hwy 93 from from Henderson to I-40 then on to Flagstaff; Flagstaff to Phoenix via 1-17. Overall, a very nice drive with the MAJOR exception of hwy 395 between Reno and Las Vegas. I think I'd skip that next time. B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!

Re: Best route Portland Oregon to Phoenix AZ 14 years ago Not sure where route goes that voyaging suggests, may be route Den suggests. mileage about right Route over Hwy 58 and 97 to K falls then to Reno and LV is about 30 miles shorter, 1250 or so. I have noyt been betweeen Reno and LV, bus suspect it is boring as Den notes. you may be able to make pretty good time though. We don't go south to LA area very often. our son was stationed San Berdo so we did go there a ccouple of times, and earlier drove to Disneyland twice. I do not like I5 from Stockton south,Trucks seem to have taken it over the right lane. and cars take theeft lane, maybe we just hit it wrong. But I try to avoid that Once we took 395 but another time took 99 down the valley. that was not too bad and better if you turn east at Bakersfield. You can miss much of LA traffic if tou do that.
Level 4. Re: Best route Portland Oregon to Phoenix AZ 14 years ago We make the drive from Las Vegas to Portland once a year. It's a loooong and very boring drive. Takes us two days each direction. From Portland to LV we take I-5 to Sacramento and spend the night. Then take I-5 to Bakersfield and cut across on...I think it's Highway 58 (I've usually nodded off by this point, regardless of whether we're heading to or from PDX and besides hubby is driving!). Then once we reach Barstow we take I-15 into LV. You can also in Stockton hop on US 99 and go that route. It's a little longer but there are more places to stop than on I-5. We've done that a couple of times just to try something different. But we prefer I-5 as there is less traffic and it seems to be faster. Even though there are A LOT of trucks. From Las Vegas you can take US 95/93 across Hoover Dam and into Arizona to Kingman where you'd hook up with I-40. And then head south at Wickenberg. Or you can drop down thru Laughlin, NV and go thru Bullhead City, AZ and then catch I-40. We've driven to Reno several times on 395...Den isn't kidding about it being boring. Very little to see....very few places to stop...limited radio reception and two narrow lanes. As a result we never go to PDX that way. As kids our family vacationed a lot in Northern Arizona and we always went from Portland, thru the Gorge, down in Twin Falls, Idaho and then straight thru Utah into Arizona. If you've got the time it's not that bad of a drive. Good luck!

I kept working on the various routes and found out I can use timeshare places along the route making it almost a mini vacation. We're going to leave from Hillsboro south on I-5 very early in the morning before rush hour is even awake. We're going to look into taking Rt 20 at Williams CA through Yuba City and pick up I-80 as they intersect. That should shave off lots of time (instead of taking I-5 to Sacramento and I-80 to Lake Tahoe) We can stay at Lake Tahoe overnight. I've got timeshare there. It has a jacuzzi or whirlpool bath so that should come in handy after a very long day of driving. Cost will be $39, for the exchange and $66. for housekeeping. Still OK for Lake Tahoe in the middle of summer. Then from Lake Tahoe, we'll be taking the very boring route 95 to Las Vegas. (We did that road several times taking kids to Lake Tahoe only to find after 3-4 days of snowboarding they rather end the trip at the Venician and run around on the strip. That was back in the day when the Venician was new and much much cheaper esp during the week) We'll stay in another timeshare that is close to the strip and has a jacuzzi bath in the room. Cost will be $0. Finally on day 3 we'll head out from Vegas to Phoenix. I'll leave it up to the driver to determine how he wants to get home. He probably knows the quickest or best route since he has lived in the Phoenix area since '85 and taken every relative known to mankind to either Vegas, Grand Canyon or Snowbowl. I still wanted to hear the routes suggested. Thank you. This is only one third part of the first car being moved. We'll move it a few days at a time. It's a heck of a thing to move cars from coast to coast. So the second car needs to be moved from Portland to Phoenix and then on to Ft. Lauderdale later too. There should be an easier way but what the heck we get a bit of a vacation and our kid gets one of his cars moved for free basically.

My husband and I are true road warriors and we frequently drive 395 on our way to Palm Springs from Eugene. It is one of our favorite drives and we've done many. Scenery is spectacular along the east side of the Sierras. We can't get enough of 395!

Two, "I still wanted to hear the routes suggested." Given what you have now said in your latest post, why did you bother even asking about the quickest route? That's a rhetorical question...
