How many fireworks does Disney use?

There is no better way to end a day at Walt Disney World than by looking to the sky. No one does fireworks better than Disney. A lot goes into putting on the shows night after night. Here are ten mind blowing facts and things that you might want to know about the fireworks at Walt Disney World.

10. Cost

Ever wonder how much it costs to set off all of those fireworks? You’re going to have to keep wondering, because Disney will not release that information. An educated guess is that it costs over $18 million a year. Disney uses over one million fireworks annually, and they are said to be the largest user of fireworks in the United States.

9. Launch

Most fireworks use gunpowder for the launch but that is not the case at Walt Disney World. Instead, they use compressed air. There are two reasons for this. First, the launch is higher this way. Second, gunpowder is known for its fumes. There are no extra fumes for guests to breathe in when compressed air is used. That doesn’t mean that you won’t smell anything, the fireworks still burn. It just means that you won’t be breathing in gunpowder fumes.

8. Views

While the fireworks shows were created to be viewed inside the parks, it can be hard to fight your way out once they are finished. Great viewing areas for all the major shows can be found outside of the parks as well. The Magic Kingdom Resort Area hotels all sport fantastic places to watch, ask a Cast Member to point you in the right direction. For something extra special, make a dinner reservation at California Grill. You’ll then enjoy arguably the best view outside of the Magic Kingdom. If you want to watch the fireworks from Disney’s Hollywood Studios or Epcot, head to the Epcot Resort Area. There are some great spots to watch along Crescent Lake. You don’t even need to be on Walt Disney World property to enjoy the fireworks. They can be seen and heard in many nearby areas, even if you’re miles away.

7. Dry Season

During the summer there is a chance of rain most days in Central Florida. The same is not always true during the late winter and spring. Sometimes weeks will go by with no measurable rain, and wild fires start to spring up. At the Magic Kingdom they will water down the pavement to keep down the possibility of fires. The fireworks at Disney’s Hollywood Studios are a different story. To keep everyone safe, if the weather has been particularly dry Disney will cut back on the amount of fireworks that they use inside the park.

6. Two Shows in One Day

Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a huge success since it’s debut in 2016. For the Christmas season, there is another fireworks show called Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM!. Hollywood Studios runs both shows from time to time over the holiday season. Add a little more magic to that… if you consider that there are fireworks in Fantasmic!, that’s three that were running at one time.

5. Holiday Shows

Speaking of the holidays, they are always special at Walt Disney World. Special times call for special fireworks. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party offer special themed fireworks jsut for the parties while Happily Ever After runs on non-party nights. Holiday fireworks also take place to celebrate Independence Day, and to ring in the New Year.

4. No Fireworks at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

While fireworks are the perfect ending to a day at the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, or Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the same can’t be said at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Rivers of Light and Tree of Life Awakenings are nighttime shows, but there are no fireworks in it. The reason is simple, Disney does not want the loud fireworks to bother the animals who call the park home.

3. IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth

Note: We’re sad to say that Illuminations’ last show is September 30, 2019. “Epcot Forever”, a temporary fireworks spectacular, will begin October 1, 2019.

At Epcot the end of the night show is IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth. Most nights the show takes place at 9:00pm. During the Christmas season it is moved back to 9:30. Fireworks are just one element of IllumiNations. It tells “The Story of Earth”. The tale is in three parts. There is a 350,000 pound globe in the story, and fire shoots 60 feet into the air. The show ends with fireworks in a grand finale that you won’t soon forget.

2. Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular

For years Disney’s Hollywood Studios only had fireworks for special events or holidays. Things changed when Symphony in the Stars: A Galactic Spectacular debuted. The show received rave reviews from Star Wars fans, but Disney was not done. On June 17, 2016 Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular replaced it. The show uses both fireworks and projection to allow guests to relive some of the top moments from the Star Wars movies. The music of the legendary John Williams adds to the experience. Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular is adaptable. Scenes from the most recent Star Wars films have been added. There’s a good chance that there will be more changes, since more Star Wars movies are set to be released.

1. Happily Ever After

Wishes Nighttime Spectacular was a much loved fireworks display that delighted guests at the Magic Kingdom for over a dozen years. When it was announced that it was ending, many people thought that it couldn’t be replaced. Disney has outdone themselves with Happily Ever After. The show debuted on May 12, 2017, and the results are amazing. Cinderella Castle becomes the backdrop for the projection show, but that doesn’t mean that the fireworks are scaled back. In fact, they’re bigger and bolder than ever. Seventeen different Disney movies are featured in the show, and the songs have been updated for the score. While most guests will choose to watch from Main Street, U.S.A., there are great viewing areas throughout the Magic Kingdom. Happily Ever After is not to be missed, and even die hard Wishes fans agree that it is incredible.
