How many people are in the World 2023?

How many people are in the World 2023?
According to the UN, we will be closer to 11 billion people by the end of the century.

There have never been so many of us in the world. As of 15 November, 2022, there will be "one billion more human beings than in 2010, two billion more than in 1998 and five and a half billion more than in 1950", according to the newspaper LeMonde. In total, there will be eight billion people on Earth by mid-November, according to the UN.

On World Population Day, 11 July, the United Nations chose to release this projection based on their latest demographic data. Currently, the world's population is increasing at its slowest rate since 1950, according to the UN.

Today is #WorldPopulationDay! This year, the worlds population will reach 8 billion. However, with rapid population growth and urbanization, problems such as pollution and waste are exacerbating.

Only "one chance in two" that the curve will be reversed before the end of the century, even though UN demographers estimate that it is "95% certain" that we will be between 8.9 and 12.4 billion by 2100. 8 billion in 2023, 10 billion in 2059 and up to 10.4 billion people in the 2080s.

The cause? A significant drop in fertility in the so-called developed countries, according to the UN: "Two thirds of the world's population live in a country or area where lifetime fertility is less than 2.1 births per woman, which is about the level required for long-term zero growth for a low-mortality population," the report states.

Population growth in the coming decades will occur mainly in "sub-Saharan African countries, which are expected to contribute more than half of the projected increase up to 2050." The eight countries estimated to see the largest population growths are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines and Tanzania.

One in two births will take place in Africa by 2050. Yet Africa is not the most populous continent in the world. In 2023, India will overtake China as the most populous country in the world. According to the study, there will be 1.668 billion Indians compared to 1.317 billion Chinese in 2050.

The world population will reach 8 billion on 15 November 2022, according to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

It also projects that the global population will reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people in the 2080s, and will remain at that level until 2100. pic.twitter.com/OWmdZcf8p9

The significant population growth in these regions of the world is explained by the "increase in the number of people of reproductive age" combined with a decline in maternal and infant mortality rates. The UN study explains that this growth "has been accompanied by marked changes in fertility rates, increasing urbanisation and accelerating migration".

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres was quick to comment on the situation: "As we anticipate the birth of the Earth's eight billionth inhabitant, this is "a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a time to reflect on where we are still failing to live up to our commitments to one another."
