The weight of a potato may seem quite straightforward, but different varieties, allowed to grow to different sizes depending on their intended use, don’t all weigh the same amount.

This can make it hard to judge how many potatoes are in a particular bag.

Knowing how much different potatoes weigh can help you estimate how many are in any bag or how many bags you need for a recipe.

Potato Type Weights

There are many different potato varieties, and each variety can weigh more or less than the next.

Russet potatoes are very common, and they generally weigh around 5.3 ounces, although they can grow to as large as 10 ounces.

Yellow potatoes are a bit larger, and they usually weigh between 8 and 12 ounces.

Red potatoes, meanwhile, tend to be much smaller.

They usually weigh about 6 ounces, at most, and some can weigh as little as 1 ounce.

Yukon gold potatoes, another common variety, weigh about the same as a russet.

Their average weight is 5.2 ounces.

Potato Weights Based on Size

Potatoes don’t all grow to the same size.

A small russet, yellow, or another common potato generally weighs around 3.5 ounces.

A medium potato, of a common variety, usually weighs around 5.5 ounces.

A large potato will usually weigh around 10 ounces, although some can weigh a bit more.

This, of course, does vary from type to type.

Small red potatoes will weigh significantly less than small yellow potatoes.

Figuring out exactly how many potatoes are in 2 pounds can be tricky since each potato will vary a bit in weight, even if they’re all the same type and roughly the same size.

However, using the average weight of any potato type can get you an answer that’s a very close estimate.

There are 16 ounces to 1 pound. If your 2-pound bag of potatoes is made up of russet potatoes, we know that the average weight of each potato is about 5.3 ounces. Sixteen divided by 5.3 is just slightly over 3, which tells us that there are about three average-sized russet potatoes in a pound.

To figure out how many potatoes of any given type are in a 5-pound bag, we will again need to take the average weight of the potato type and figure out how many times that goes into 16.

This formula tells us that there are about 15 russet potatoes in a 5-pound bag. It also tells us that a 5-pound bag will contain about eight yellow potatoes, 22.5 red potatoes, or about 15 Yukon gold potatoes.

How many potatoes are there in a 10-pound bag?

We can use the same formula as above, substituting 10 for 5, to figure out how many of any type of potato is in a 10-pound bag.

There will be about 30 russet potatoes, 16 yellow potatoes, 46 red potatoes, and 31 Yukon gold potatoes per bag.
