How many squares are in this picture 4x4 grid?

Sometimes the most seemingly simple tasks can turn out to be the most complicated. While that’s a frustrating fact of life in general, it does make for some fun brain teasers! Take this puzzle that’s been making the rounds on WhatsApp, challenging you to do something that seems laughably simple: Count the squares. It might seem a whole lot simpler than these tricky math riddles and logic puzzles, but it will make you think for sure!

WhatsApp is a chat app that allows users to make calls, video calls, and text conversations. People have been using WhatsApp, like many social media apps, to stay in touch during the pandemic—and, of course, to send each other all manner of Internet silliness. WhatsApp itself has a variety of puzzles and brainteaser images, and one of them surged in perplexing popularity at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown. See if you can solve it!

The puzzle challenges you to correctly identify the number of squares in this grid. In case your memory of middle school geometry is a little fuzzy, a square is a shape with four sides of equal length. So a four-sided shape with different-sized sides does not count.

It seems pretty easy at first, but don’t forget you have to account for squares that overlap each other, squares within squares, big squares, and little squares. It’s trickier than you think (just like this viral duck riddle). If finding hidden words is more your thing, see how you handle these rebus puzzles and math puzzles.

How Many Squares Do You See?

Ready for the answer?

All told, there are 40 squares hiding in plain sight here. Didn’t find that many? Take a look below to see them all highlighted, or give it another try. Don’t forget that while the big square comprises 16 of the medium-sized squares, you can make squares with combos of four and nine medium squares.

Ready to boggle your brain even more? The Internet can’t figure out how many triangles are in this figure, either. Or test your perception skills with more challenging visual brain teasers.

New puzzles that seem to stump everyone on the web pop up all the time. Despite the mass confusion, however, it’s still easy to think “Pssh, I can solve this no problem.” That’s right. We somehow think that we are more clever than the vast majority of the internet.

Delusions of grandeur aside, the fact of the matter is: Some of these puzzles are hard. And here’s yet another one. That is also frustratingly hard. See for yourself.

This particular puzzle has left the internet scratching their heads, although the premise itself is simple: Figure out how many squares are in the picture.

Easy, right? Not so much. This photo has been making the rounds on Facebook and, according to an image that has been circulating the site, 92 percent of people fail to answer the puzzle correctly. There are tons of answers floating around on the web, and people just can’t seem to come to an agreement.

However, there is one correct answer, and you might be surprised at what it is. The catch here is that there are far more squares than there seem to be. Even if you count all the corner squares and the big surrounding square, you might not be getting them all. Go ahead, try to count yourself.

Still stumped? We’ll help you out. The correct answer to the puzzle is 40 squares. That’s right: It’s not 8162428 or 30, and we’ll tell you why. The image is made up of eight tiny squares, 18 single squares, nine 2 x 2 squares, four 3 x 3 squares, and one 4 x 4 square.

Don't ask me what's up with the thumbnail.
For clarification, there are:
16 1x1 squares
9 2x2 squares
4 3x3 squares
1 4x4 square
For a total of 30
The grids can be any rectangle of size x by y
I'll post my solution tomorrow

Ask the students how many squares are there in a 4x4 grid of squares. Many will answer 16. Tell them that there are more than that.

After they have had a chance to think about and have yelled out some more answers ask them how many squares there are in a 1x1 grid (1) and in a 2x2 grid (the 4 small squares and the 1 big square = 5) and a 3x3 grid (9 small squares, 4 of the 2x2, and 1 big one = 14).

So the total for a 4x4 is 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 30. The total for any nxn square is (n squared + n-1 squared + n-2 sqaured down to 1 when n=1.

How many squares are there in 4 * 6 grid?

Hence, 50 is the number of square.

How many squares are in this picture 2x2 grid?

In a 2x2 grid there are actually 5 squares "of any size." This is because a 2x2 grid contains 4 1x1 squares and then a single square of size 2x2. You can see here that there are 5 squares of multiple sizes. There are four 1x1 squares and then a 2x2 square (the dashed-square). There are 4 + 1 = 5 total squares.

How many squares are there in this picture answer?

When you count all the possible squares there are, your answer will be equal to 40.
