Uno is a popular card game played across the globe. The uno card game started with a single, classic version. Still, other uno versions exist today, including those with a specially printed deck or customizable wild cards. There is also a fancy version of the game called uno spin and an exciting and innovative version called uno flip. This article, however, will be focusing on the latest edition of the classical uno. In all uno versions, the Uno deck consists of 112 cards. In the older versions, all 112 cards are playable, while in the latest version, 108 of the 112 cards are playable cards, and the other 4 are blank cards. These blank cards are not used and kept aside while playing the original uno card game. We will understand the use and purpose of these cards later in this article. So, the 112 cards in an uno deck are divided into various colors and types, each having its function. Before we get into the details, let us understand some basics of the game. Setting up the gameThe standard rules of the uno card game say that the dealer must deal each player seven cards after shuffling the deck, and they must be dealt face down. The remaining deck is put in the center, face down, forming the draw pile. The top card from the draw pile is put in the center, face-up, forming the discard pile. This is the game’s first card, and the color and face value of this card sets the game in motion. The uno card game rules also suggest that the player to the dealer’s left plays first. How to play the uno card game? The first player must throw a card that matches the card on the top of the discard pile to begin play. A card is said to match if it has a matching color or the same face value. For example, let us assume that the top card is a green card with the number 8. So, the first player must either throw a green colored card or any other colored card with the number 8. The player can also choose to throw a wild card or wild draw 4 cards if they have one. If they do not have a playable card, they have no matching cards or wild cards, then the player draws from the draw pile. If the card drawn matches, they must immediately play it, and if it does not match, the player has to add it to the cards in their hand. The next player then has to match the card previously played by the first player, and if they do not have a playable card, they too have to draw a card from the draw pile, and the game goes on this way with the next person doing the same and so on. If the draw pile gets exhausted, the discard pile is shuffled after removing the last card played to form a new draw pile. Who wins the uno game?According to the game’s official rules, the first player to get rid of all the cards in their hand is considered to be the winner of the uno card game. Note – when left with their last card, the player immediately has to call out ‘UNO’ or else they would have to perform the penalty and draw cards (2 or 4 depending upon the rules) from the draw pile if another player catches the default. These colors are red, blue, green, yellow, and black. The cards are divided into colors as follows-

Now, let us look into these various types of cards in detail. How many cards in an uno deck are numbered cards?The numbered cards account for a major portion of an uno deck. There are 76 number cards in total. There are two cards of the same number, from 1 to 9, in each color (excluding black) in the latest version of uno. This means that there are 8 cards of each of these numbers. The number 0 only has one card per color (red, blue, green, and yellow), which means that the deck consists of 4 cards that have the number 0 on them. Here is a detailed breakdown of the same –
If you have an older version of the card game, you will find 80 number cards in total as in the older versions. The number 0 also appears twice in each of the four colors, increasing to 8 cards per deck. Note – this difference does not affect the total number of cards in an uno deck as in the newer version, the extra cards with the number 0 on them were replaced by blank cards which are not there in the older versions, maintaining a total of 112 cards in both versions. There are 24 special cards in total, and have three types. So, an action or special card could be a skip card, a reverse card, or a draw two card. Such cards put the player next to you in a position of disadvantage, which could be useful to you and the other players in the game! So use them wisely! Functions of action or special cardsSkip card – when a player plays a skip card by throwing it face up in the discard pile, the next player loses his turn, meaning he has been ‘skipped.’ The player after the skipped person continues the game. If a skip card turns up at the beginning of the game, the player to the dealer’s left loses his turn, and the next player to that person begins the game. Reverse card – a reverse card simply changes the direction of the play. For example, if the turns were being played in a clockwise direction, they would now be played in an anti-clockwise direction. If a reverse card turns up at the beginning of the game, the player to the dealer’s right begins the game. Draw two-card – when a player plays a draw two card, the next player must pick up two cards from the draw pile, face down, and add them to the cards in their hand. The challenged player also loses his turn. If a draw two card turns up at the beginning of the game, the player to the dealer’s left has to draw cards from the draw pile, and the next player begins the game. How many cards in an uno deck are wild cards?The black cards in the uno deck are wild cards. They are 4 in number. Having wild cards could prove to be a great advantage to you as they can get you out of the situation of having to draw a card and increase the number of cards in your hand when you do not possess a matching card. They also let you change the game’s flow according to what suits you best, increasing your chances of winning! How to play a wild card?A player with a wild card can throw it into the discard pile upon his turn at any game point. The player also has to call out a color to continue the play. The color could be any of the four colors. If a wild card turns up at the beginning of the game, the player to the left of the dealer chooses the color that shall continue play. How many cards in an uno deck are wild draw four (wild draw 4) cards?An extension of wild cards, wild draw four cards are also black. An uno deck includes 4 wild draws four cards. They are the strongest cards in the game, and if you have got one in your hand, the person next to you is in deep trouble! How to play a wild draw four (wild draw 4) card?Similar to the case of a wild card, the player who plays the wild draw four cards has to call out a color of their choice that shall continue the game. The only difference is that in the case of a wild draw four cards, the next player must draw four cards from the draw pile, and the challenged player misses their turn. If a wild draw four (wild draw 4) card turns up at the beginning of the game, it is returned to the deck, and the next top card is picked. How to use blank cards?Blank cards can be used in two ways- As a replacement card – in case you lose or damage a card from your uno deck, you can use a blank card of the same color to replace it. As a special card – blank cards can also be used to write your own house rules, which can be changed with every game. So here is what you have been doing wrong… Throwing a drawcard when the previous player challenges you to draw cards – when a player throws you a draw 2 or wild draw 4 card, you cannot throw a similar card and make the next person draw double! We know that you have tried doing it, but it is not allowed! You have to draw the cards yourself! Taking turns after drawing 2 or 4 cards – if you are challenged to draw cards, you lose your turn! You cannot draw cards and then continue to play your turn! Throwing another card with a wild card – when you play a wild card, you have to call out a color of your choice, and your turn is over with that. You are not supposed to throw a card of your chosen color with your wild card! Drawing more than one card from the draw pile – if you do not have a card that matches the top card, you are supposed to draw just one card. You do not keep drawing cards till you get a matching one, and you do not force other players to do that either! Throwing more than one card in a single turn – people are often confused about how many cards can be thrown in a single turn. Only one card can be thrown by a player in a single turn. If you have more playable cards, you would have to wait for your next turn to use them. This goes for identical cards too. One at a time! Not ending the game with an action card – a player can win even if the last card they play is an action card! You do not want someone else to win, but these are the right rules!
