How many weeks in 180 school days

Class is in session.

Whether you have school-aged children or are an educator yourself, it’s important to know exactly how many weeks are in a school year so you can plan vacations, curriculums, and childcare.

On average, there are between 175 to 180 school days in a year, which means there are between 25 and 25.7 full school weeks a year, and 40 weeks counting weekends and holidays.

It’s important to note that the requirement of weeks per school year varies by state and grade level.

How many weeks in a school year

The requirement of weeks per school year varies by state and grade level. Most states require 180 days of instruction a year, spread over 40 weeks.

Each state determines the number of days required for public schools, and private schools set the hours of instruction required themselves. Some states even determine the required start and finish date.

Managing a classroom efficiently

Being a teacher is tough. You only have 180 days to educate children about important topics that will set them up for success in the future. These three steps will help you make the most out of those 40 weeks.

1. Plan ahead

Lesson planning takes a huge part of a teacher’s week. Use a lesson plan template to standardize your process, so you can get teaching instead of planning. Fill in your lesson plans two months ahead of time in pencil, then you can edit any changes throughout the week.

2. Leverage technology

The education industry is always a little slow to adopt new technologies. With budget cuts and less than adequate pay, it’s hard to make the business case for educational software. Current use cases for education software are AR/VR to provide reinforcements for a difficult topic, artificial intelligence to answer student questions outside of school hours, and digital materials to further enhance learning. Technology in the classroom is highly debated, but with the right education software, you can save time and teach more.

3. Manage your classroom

As attention spans grow smaller with the widespread use of iPhones, it’s harder to keep students engaged. Try to limit distractions as much as possible. To do this, consider taking phones in the morning and returning them in the afternoon, or investing in classroom management software to limit students’ access to certain websites during school hours.

Use your time wisely

With about 25 weeks to teach, it’s no surprise that teachers are always working overtime. Learning how to make the most of that short amount of time will lead to your own, and your students’ success.
