While Trader Joe’s make a whole lot of frozen meals that need to be cooked, they also dabble heavily in the wonderful realm of ice cream. And, since ice cream is a frozen food, it falls under our review-writing jurisdiction. That’s a good thing, because it means we get to try out treats such as the Trader Joe’s Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches.

These tasty little treats come four in a box, and each one is individually wrapped. This is perfect for people who want to grab a single snack and keep the rest safely stashed away in the freezer for later.

The cookie portion here is soft and a little bit chewy. It actually reminds us a little bit of the cookies you can buy at Subway (if you can get them when they’re still fresh). That’s not a bad thing at all, and it makes a pretty good outer portion for this sandwich.

But it’s the filling that’s the real treat — the sweet, delicious ice cream. And, as you can see in the picture below, these suckers are loaded up with chocolate chips.

Of course, looks can be deceiving, and the looks here are definitely on the deceptive side. The chocolate chip content is just decoration for the outer shell of the ice cream — once you bite past it, the rest of the filling is pure vanilla ice cream. That’s not exactly a bad thing, as that chocolate chip density wouldn’t work if it were consistent all the way through the ice cream. That would be just too much.

Each sandwich contains 440 calories (190 from fat), which means you’re probably not going to want to eat more than one at a time. Of course, these are so rich that you’re better off just eating one at a time — any more than that can start to feel overly gratuitous.

The Trader Joe’s Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches are a frozen treat that will make you smile. While the word sublime might be a bit of an exaggeration here, we really like these. We’re definitely going to pick up more of them the next time we spot them at our local Trader Joe’s.

I love looking through the selections in the dessert freezer at Trader Joe’s. Among my family’s favorite treats from Aldi’s cousin are the macarons, and the vanilla ice cream, and the Hold the Cone ice cream cones. When asked about favorite desserts, many devoted TJ’s fans will probably mention the Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches.

These aren’t your usual ice cream sandwiches with the rectangle shapes and the soft perforated chocolate crusts. Instead, these feature two chocolate chip cookies with a vanilla ice cream filling covered in tiny chocolate chips. They look like the delicious ice cream sandwiches the dining hall used to make and serve every week at the youth summer camp I worked at back when I was a college student, so I had to pick up a box to try.

We enjoyed these ice cream sandwiches on a Friday evening as part of a family movie night. They were, as the name states, sublime. The ice cream is smooth, creamy, and rich, and the chocolate chip cookies are the perfect vehicle for holding the ice cream and getting it to your mouth, while the mini chocolate chips add a nice bit of crunch. I’ve had a lot of ice cream sandwiches in my lifetime, and these were surprisingly good. I think I’ve found a new favorite at Trader Joe’s.

The Verdict:

Trader Joe’s Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches are a divine treat, with rich and creamy ice cream, perfectly baked cookies, and tiny chocolate chips that add some crunch. Highly recommended.
