How to attach lid to Rubbermaid garbage can

5.0 out of 5 stars New versus old version.

I’ve had the old version for about 3 years and it’s been perfect for both my trash and recycle. The step feature finally broke on my trash so I had to order this newer version. It looks mostly the same but the lid doesn’t open quite as wide with the step as the old one, which means you have to lift it with your hands for it to be fully open. It opens enough to get stuff in if you’re trying to avoid touching the lid, for whatever reason. It holds the 13 gallon trash bags, which I have coming through the subscribe and save program making my life easier. If this one lasts another 3 years it’s worth every penny.(New version is in front, labeled trash and on the left in the pictures)

I really like this trash can. It's one of the better ones you can buy if you're not into spending 80$ on a trash can! Step to open is necessary imo. The plastic pieces at the top (1st pic) hold the bag in place nicely. The one slight issue there is that they need to lift up a bit more to secure the bag properly. If you pull up too hard the piece holding it in place snaps off and then it's useless. If that piece breaks you need a whole new can. So a little more room would be good. Next, I wish it was easier to clean. If you see in the 2nd photo, the lid has all these extra ridges that create tiny spaces where dirt gets trapped and you can't get in them to clean it unless you use a q tip or something. All those extra plastic ridges are unnecessary and complicate cleaning. Maybe the circular one is for structure but why not just use a sturdier piece of plastic instead? Same thing at the bottom of the can (3rd pic), all those little nooks and crannies are hard to clean and cause dirt to build up. I clean each time I change the bag to control this, however, say if a bag tears and liquids leak out... It's very difficult to get it back to perfectly clean unless you spray it with hose or something. This is highly impractical because the can needs to be totally dry before you put the bag in or else dirt particles get in the water and you've got a whole new mess. I recommend using a strong bag that won't tear to avoid this. That being said, these are minor issues and if you're careful and clean consistently it's no bother. All in all I'm happy with this and would definitely recommend it!

tl;dr: great can but somewhat difficult to clean and some smaller parts can break.

This is a nice trash can. We had to throw out our last, rather expensive, stainless steel lidded trash can in our last move. After cleaning up the mess our cats made knocking over a "normal" trash can yet again, I decided it was time to get another lidded can. With a germ-ophobe in the house, we prefer step on to any other lidded can, but don't really have the money at the moment to invest in another expensive can. This is proving to be a capable alternative. Instead of a full lining, it simply has a ring at the top to hold down the bag, but this works just as well in our experience. It is definitely easier for my husband to manage getting the bag to stay tucked away than our old can was.

I like how the can is as big as a standard kitchen trash bag, so there seems to be no wasted space in the bag when we remove it from the bin. The step works quickly and easily, but it's also possible to open it with a hand, which at times I prefer.

One thing that annoys me a bit is that the base is slightly smaller than the top. This doesn't appear to impact its stability - the cats havent managed to knock it over yet - but it does get pushed into the wall over time as we push into it with a foot to open it. So it's a bit tilted most of the time. It just looks odd, but doesn't impact the workings of the trash can, so it's something I just correct when I see it and move on.

I also don't think this will hold up for nearly as long as our last trash can did. The ring that holds the bag in is just plastic with plastic hinges that don't feel super sturdy. They only get messed with when you change the bag, so it isn't a big problem, but they probably eventually will break. If those can be cheaply replaced, this can will probably last many years. While the step itself is plastic, the mechanism is metal and very sturdy and not exposed, so the risk of damage is minimal.

I feel like I got a good deal on this trash can, and I like that if we decide we need another in our house, this is cheap enough to just buy again. While I don't think it will last forever, I think it is sturdy enough for now. And it looks nice enough, too.

It was packed tight in a box. Which when I got it was in bad shape. The can was not harmed. It came with no instruction. The only way I knew how it all worked. Is that on the lid the instruction was imprinted. I don’t like how the bag is held in. It works but very cumbersome.

A bit smaller than I expected and looks difficult to clean the inside but it has been a good trash can so far and I like it

Very good . Heavy duty . I gave four stars because when garbage pin came , the caver of pin separated from pin after that I tried hardly to fix in his position correctly. And it can be broken.

Edit to add: the top end is wider and deeper than the bottom end so if you have it backed against a wall there is a gap between the bottom of the trash can and the wall, so when you step on the pedal it slides out form under your foot until it hits the wall. Annoying but a simple fix with a block between the trash can and wall.

Pretty much what you expect with a basic trash can. I bought this because of the flip up lid instead of the swinging lid I had. It has supports to hold the bag up and open and is fairly large. Holds a lot of dirty diapers but doesn’t let the smell out of it’s closed all the way!
I wouldn’t say this is for small spaces, and the lid kind of sticks closed for a second when you step on the pedal, but that seems to be getting better with use as it “breaks in”
Not bad for $20!

I bought two of these (black) for separate trash can and recycle bin.

The first one used for trash, the bottom is a little warped, doesn't sit flush on the kitchen floor, has a slight wobble to it and leans diagonally forward to the left side. Eventually, I put a small rubber adhesive bumper/foot (similar to ones put on cabinet doors when closing) underneath to level it out.

The second used as recycling bin, lid isn't perfectly shaped/aligned, doesn't close and seal top of the bin like my other one. This arrived without plastic wrapping, was thrown in a box with lid detached and very little packing material, maybe got damaged during shipment or I received a customer return when I should've received brand new (my other trash can was plastic wrapped with top lid already attached).

I'm keeping both, but I can't give either a 5-star rating. They're good enough, but both have imperfections, not good quality control from Rubbermaid brand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality product. Avoid it as well as as iBhejo as a seller

Reviewed in India on February 15, 2018

Please ignore All reviews. Seem to be planted ones. The product quality is ordinary and hinge design is poor. The lid comes off with each press on the foot pedal. I had to make a modification myself to make it usable. This is not acceptable from an item at this price. I did contact the seller, who just gave an evasive answer that they will approach the manufacturer. Avoid this product as well as seller.

22/02/18 - Received a call from the seller a week ago with false promises for follow up with the manufacturer. No further inputs.

I was disappointed to find out that it wasn't 53 liter but 43 liter. Thats why I didn't rate it higher. Delivery was excellent.
After 2 years the lid broke off, I'm disappointed it didn't last longer. Complained to Rubbermaid, after they determined it
wasn't abused, they sent me a new one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practico

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely horrendous quality. Just ABYSMAL!

Reviewed in Canada on November 1, 2017

This is a seriously GARBAGE product with ABYSMAL quality. The lid doesn’t stay attached; it detached EVERY TIME you open the lid! the two handles that should keep the trash bags don’t sit flush with the body or the lid. There are SO MANY better choices on other websites and in stores. Stay away from this.

How do you secure outdoor garbage cans?

Attach D-rings to the side of the house or garage. Then use bungee cords to secure the trash can. Build a wooden or concrete block enclosure against the house to place the trash can in to keep it secure. An enclosure like this will block the wind, keeping your trash can(s) in place.
