How to get Manic panic atomic turquoise out of hair

  • So i wanted to dye my hair a nice pastel blue color. I've done pastels before and it turned out flawless, however this time I was a little impatient. My hair was a darkish purple/redish color. I had a left over lightening bleach kit from splat that I used a while ago. I left it on for 40 minutes and it came out pretty decent. I also used a pale blonde toner once I was finished.

The ends of my hair were a nice pale color almost gray which i thought was perfect for what I wanted. The top was barley yellowish. I diluted manic panic atomic turquoise with white conditioner as I have done previously when doing pastels. The ends turned out the color I wanted....the top was green.

Needless to say I panicked, and started to throw the dye without conditioner towards the roots and it still turned green. ( i dont know why Indid this honestly, i know the two colors mix to green, a tiny party of me wanted to believe I could fix it) My hair is now literally a true gemstone turquoise.

Now I don't hate the color, but I don't love it either. It is also hard to dress it up since I work in an office and have to be business professional.

I want to try again to get the pastel blue. Im going to a family reunion with my boyfriend to meet his family in about 2 and a half weeks and I don't want to go with this colored hair. When I bleached it, it feels like I barley did any damage, my hair still feels great and is not how it normally is when I've bleached in the past. It honestly looks pretty healthy as well.

Any tips on how to get rid of this? Im not opposed to bleaching it again if needed, my hair has been in far worse condition than this and i've been able to restore it.

I was thinking to wash it out as much as possible and maybe yse the manic panic vigrin snow?

Also looking for recommendations on blue dye to use.

  • I've had really good luck removing blues and greens with the Bleach powder/shampoo/oils method. Just the powder though, don't add developer and make sure you deep condition afterwards since it can be very drying. Even if it doesn't remove it completely, it should get you light enough to cover it with another color.

  • Try the bleach/oils/shampoo method linked below. It's great for getting out semi-permanent dyes with minimal damage. Definitely try to use that as your go-to method for switching colours rather than a full-on bleach, which is really not very effective at removing artificial colours. Make sure you keep the heat on it for the full processing time (15-20 minutes for me, but some people can do less) and it should get out a lot of the green.

As for pastel blue. You really need almost a white base, which means you'll need to bleach your roots. I'd suggest using a better brand to get better lift with 10-20 vol peroxide. Matrix Light Master is great, but Blond Brilliance and AgeBeautiful Creme Lightener are also decent options you can find at Sally's. How many times have you processed your hair (used bleach or permanent dye)?

  • Business professional to me means no colorful hair other a naturally born color unfortunately. Fortunately my environment is not as conservative. I humbly suggest if interested in fun colors like light blue or light pink make sure it is okay with human resources and the rules on dress code within your work environment.

My colleagues already gave some great tips on reducing to eliminating the green.

Since the roots were yellow, not surprised because adding blue to yellow does make green. Adding more blue-green will just make the color more green and more intense. Atomic Turquoise is difficult to remove but not impossible. ION is a brand in my non-professional experience is impossible to fully remove. This is a positive.

The hair would imagine is or will become very dry. To help keep hair from becoming too dry suggest after washing and conditioning allow the hair to air dry. Allowing the hair to air dry gives time for the moisture to soak into the scalp and onto the hair strand.

Best of luck getting to a color you are happy with and work will allow.

This is my opinion and suggestions.

  • Thank you so much for the great advice everyone! Im going to try them this weekend, i'll let you know how it works!

In regard to bleaching my hair, in the past 2-3 years i did my full head 3 times. And touched my roots maybe 3 times as well. Bur just perm. Dye in general, i cant even begin to tell you how many times. But i've never had any problems until now.

Also, the best part of my job is that I am in Human Resources! They dont mind my hair, as long as it is not toooo over the top. I personally feel this is too loud for me, and when it comes to my wardrobe, it just looks ridiculous.

  • I just got ion blue out of my hair using the above method and two rounds of Malibu DDL. It was super drying and now I need a trim as I was impatient and did everything to close together, but it's out.
