How to get to Kaer Morhen Witcher 3 Wolf gear

I write in great haste, for each moment might bring my demise. A band of peasants wielding all manner of sharp or heavy farmyard implements has stormed the keep. I was in the workshop when they attacked, working on a new silver sword diagram, and did not notice the mob's approach. I have barricaded the doors but know this cannot last forever. I can only hope Varin will come and rescue me before they break through.

Luckily we completed work on a new steel sword diagram a few days ago and gave it to Varin to forge. Armed with this fine weapon and aided by his witcher pupils, I'm sure he'll easily handle a bunch of peasants swinging hoes and rakes. Yet even rakes can do great harm to an unarmed scholar such as my master. Hieronymus has been shut up in his tower for days, absorbed in his work on a new armor diagram. He might remain oblivious still to the danger he is in. Should the mob find him before Varin can slice them down...

And to think I nearly escaped this nightmare! If I had only listened to my master... Hieronymus had drawn up some notes for me on locations connected with the legendary Elgar, a witcher of the School of the Wolf. It is said Elgar had devised some improvements to the School's gear, and I was to follow his trail in search of these diagrams. Had I left even as late as yesterday, I would have been a safe distance from Kaer Morhen by the time the mob attacked. Instead, I tarried, and now I cower, fearing for my life...

Figuring out how to get to Kaer Morhen in the Witcher 3 should be at the top of any diehard fan’s to-do list whenever they start the game. It’s a classic and legendary location that quite literally kicked off the very first Witcher game. The significance of the keep cannot be overstated, so getting there as soon as possible is a must. While Kaer Morhen certainly exists in the Witcher 3, and as a fully explorable region, not just a castle, it does take you a decent bit of game time before you can get there.

Funnily enough, the game’s tutorial actually takes place in a flashback in Kaer Morhen. Geralt is training Ciri with Yennefer years before the Witcher 3 takes place. So, technically, all you have to do to get to Kaer Morhen in the Witcher 3 is play the tutorial!

Of course, that only lasts for a few minutes, then you’re thrust out of the memory and into the present with Kaer Morhen nowhere to be found. You do get to go back there, though, and I’m going to show you how. There isn’t much to it, truth be told, and you can’t do anything to influence the speed at which you arrive there. Still, I’ll explain how exactly you go about gaining access to the region.

Key Details Up Front

  • Area Level: 20-25.
  • Notable Loot: School of the Wolf Witcher Gear, Superior White Raffard’s Decoction.
  • Related Characters: Vesemir, Eskel, Lambert.

How to Get to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3

Step 1 – Complete Ugly Baby

Witcher Wiki – Fandom

Figuring out how to get to Kaer Morhen in the Witcher 3 by yourself is a wasted effort that will have you running around in circles. I say that because the location is actually located behind the Witcher 3’s main story. Before you reach the quest in which Kaer Morhen is unlocked for you, you have absolutely no way of actually getting to the Witcher stronghold. You could spend hundreds of hours searching for it at the start of the game, but it would all be in vain.

To get to Kaer Morhen in the Witcher 3, you need to complete the Ugly Baby quest. Completing that quest will take you to Kaer Morhen and unlock the region for fast travel.

I’m going to try and avoid spoilers here, so I won’t be telling you anything about the story details of the Ugly Baby, or the quests leading up to it. What I will say, though, is that it’s very much a mid/late game quest. It’s the quest that kicks off Act II, takes place after some major story beats, and just before some, too.

To put it into perspective, you need to have completed main quests in White Orchard, Novigrad, and Skellige before the Ugly Baby becomes available. Once it does, you’ll have a little bit of busybody work to do before it takes you to Kaer Morhen – unlocking the area for exploration from this point out.

Step 2 – Fast Travel With a Sign Post

After completing Ugly Baby, you don’t really need to do anything to get to Kaer Morhen in the Witcher 3. The quest will leave you in the stronghold, and pretty much all of Act II’s story takes place there, so you won’t really have to leave.

If you do, though, you can get back to Kaer Morhen by simply fast traveling to it from any signpost. It’s a region, so navigate to the region map and fast travel there if you need to go back once you finish up with Act II.

The Witcher 3 Kaer Morhen Guide – What To Do When You Get There

I’m going to be summarizing each of the quests that take place in Kaer Morhen during Act II. This should come as no surprise, but there are massive story spoilers ahead. If you don’t want the details of the Witcher 3’s main story spoiled for you, then skip this section.

Disturbance

How to get to Kaer Morhen Witcher 3 Wolf gear

Disturbance is a short quest that takes place after Ugly Baby. You’ll start it by finding Yen throwing one of her typical tantrums. She’s trying to make a magic phone call but is getting no signal. She suspects something is blocking her signal (in fancier terms) and sends you off to find it. She gives you a device called a Potestaquisitor to locate the source of the disturbance.

Head to the main hall and use the device. Follow the sound it makes as it gets louder and you’ll eventually end up near Uma. Uma isn’t the issue, though. It’s actually the crates near him that are full of Dimeritium Bombs made by Lambert. Vesemir will take the bombs away and you’ll head back up to Yen for her phone call.

To Bait a Forktail

This is another short quest that takes place during Geralt’s arrival at Kaer Morhen. You’ll help Eskel hunt a Forktail, then race him back to the keep. It’s short and simple, serving more as your typical monster hunt than a main quest.

The Final Trail

The Final Trail is more in line with an actual main story mission. Geralt and Lambert are tasked with charging the Phylactery (a plot device that you’ll encounter in the story). Speak with Lambert and tell him you’re ready to set off. At this point, you need to follow him for a spell.

The two of you will eventually reach a lake, but Lambert’s boat is nowhere to be found. You can locate it Northwest of where you arrive at the lake, but you’ll need to fight some Drowners and Water Hags to get it back.

While crossing the lake, you’ll hear the sounds of a boy screaming. Lambert suggests you ignore it, and you should. If you investigate the screams, you’ll be forced to fight some Foglets.

Eventually, you’ll reach a cave system. This is the same cave used as a part of the School of the Wolf Witcher Trials. A Cyclops called Old Speartip will be sleeping in the cave. If you use Aard to break any of the cave’s walls, he will wake up. Similarly, if you get too close to him he will also wake up. You can navigate the cave using ledges to avoid this – or do as Lambert suggests and make sure “it never wakes up”, in which case you’ll need to fight it.

When you’ve dealt with Old Speartip, you’ll have to deal with a pair of non-hostile trolls. There are a few ways to resolve this, so I’ll leave the amusing details up to you to discover.

The Circle of Elements is located just past the two trolls, and there’s no fighting there. So, head on up for a bit of dialogue and a cutscene before the quest ends.

No Place Like Home

No Place Like Home is one of my favorite quests in all of the Witcher 3. It serves as a bit of quiet fun before the storm. It has no fighting and is essentially one really long cutscene with dialogue, but it’s the character interactions that make it.

During the quest, you’ll be dealing with the fallout of The Last Wish and Yennefer, as well as having a drinking game with Eskel and Lambert. I’m not going to walk you through this – it’s something best experienced for yourself.

Va Fail, Elaine

The peace and joy of No Place Like Home doesn’t last long, though. Va Fail, Elaine is another cutscene quest with no combat, but it’s an important one that sees the resolution to the Uma ordeal. When you complete it, you’ll be given a handful of quests to complete that will take you away from Kaer Morhen. Again, there’s no point running through this as it’s pretty much all dialogue and a little bit of crafting.

The Battle of Kaer Morhen

The Battle of Kaer Morhen is a major story beat and takes place a good while after Va Fail, Elaine. There are a whole bunch of different variables going on in this quest based on your decisions and actions throughout the game so far. This is a massive fight that takes place in multiple stages. For spoiler’s sake, I won’t give you any details – just be aware that this is a transition into the final act of the game.

Blood on the Battlefield

This is a short resolution to the Battle of Kaer Morhen where you and Ciri face the consequences of the fight. Again, for spoiler’s sake, I won’t be giving you any details here.

The Witcher 3 – All Notable Loot in Kaer Morhen

The School of the Wolf Witcher Gear

Witcher Wiki – Fandom

The School of the Wolf Witcher gear is a set of medium armor with two swords. It’s one of the most powerful Witcher sets in the entire game, but you only get access to it with the Scavenger Hunt: Wolf School Gear DLC. Luckily, that DLC is free of charge so you don’t have to open your wallet for it.

You’ll need a map to mark the location of the Wolf gear on your map and kick off the scavenger hunt. The earliest available map is in Lindenvale’s Blacksmith. It’s named “slightly torn notes” and can be purchased for 40 Orens. The map is available much earlier than Kaer Morhen itself is, though. Even with it, you won’t be able to get your hands on the gear until you complete Ugly Baby and start Act II of the main story.

Superior White Raffard’s Decoction

How to get to Kaer Morhen Witcher 3 Wolf gear

The Superior White Raffard’s Decoction might just be the single most important potion in all of the Witcher 3. It’s the most powerful version of what is essentially your health potion (it’s better than Swallow), so it’s important that you have its recipe – especially on higher difficulties. You need the enhanced version of the potion in order to craft the superior one, so keep that in mind before you go searching for it.

The recipe for Superior White Raffard’s Decoction can be found in a run-down building East of the lake in Kaer Morhen. Alternatively, you can buy it from a Herbalist located East of Oxenfurt.

Conclusion

That’s literally all there is to it. I wish I had some super secret way for you to access Kaer Morhen earlier in the game, but there simply isn’t one. The only way to get to the fabled Witcher stronghold of legend is to plow through the main story until it takes you there.

Ugly Baby is a level 19 quest, so it requires a fair chunk of progress to get to. Still, if you grind it out, you should be able to get from the start of the story to Kaer Morhen in a handful of play sessions.

How do I get the wolf gear in Witcher 3?

To collect the Wolf School Gear, Geralt must purchase six maps from five merchants. This gear is, currently, the best loadout available for Geralt, so it's well-worth tracking down.

Is there a way to get to Kaer Morhen early?

How early can you get the Wolf School Gear?

The Wolf School gear set requires level 14 in the base game and can be crafted by any Armorer and Blacksmith, even the Journeyman tier is enough. I'll explain more about crafting in the dedicated crafting section below.

Where to find Wolf School Gear maps?

Simply head to the main Skellige island and visit the armourer at Kaer Trolde. He's located just outside of the bridge section linking the two locations of Kaer Trolde. Purchase the map, read it and Part 6 of the Mastercrafted Scavenger Hunt will be available.
