Is it a cliché to say that Philadelphia is a character in the new Adam Sandler movie Hustle, which began streaming on Netflix today? Sure. But that doesn’t make it any less true. And with the amount of prominence the city has in the sports drama, there’s really nowhere else on the planet that Hustle could have been filmed but Philly. Starring Sandler as a fictional NBA basketball scout named Stanley Sugarman, Hustle is another admirable entry in the Adam Sandler Serious Basketball Movies Cinematic Universe. Directed by Jeremiah Zagar, with a screenplay by Taylor Materne and Will Fetters, it’s a fairly straightforward sports drama about a wild, young recruit from Spain named Bo (played by the NBA’s Juancho Hernangómez), whom Sandler is tasked with whipping into shape for the NBA in order to save his own coaching career. But Sandler’s boss, the fictional head of the Philadelphia 76ers (played by Ben Foster) isn’t making it easy. Though the story is made up, the city where it all unfolds is very much real. And the good news for Philly natives is that Hustle was filmed on location in the City of Brotherly Love. Read on to learn more about the Hustle filming locations. WHERE WAS HUSTLE FILMED?Hustle was filmed on location in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as well as in New Jersey and Spain. But Philly was the main location for the film, and also happens to be the hometown of Hustle director Jeremiah Zagar. In an interview for the Hustle press notes, Zagar said, “I know Philadelphia, I love Philadelphia and I grew up there and my parents still live there. And it was emotional for me to be able to shoot a movie there and to make sure that movie felt authentically Philadelphia. And I think it does.” He added, “I feel the film really reflects a deep love and appreciation for the city, especially South Philly.” Some famous Philly locations you might have recognized include North Philly, Old City (part of Philadelphia’s Historic District), Manayunk, South Philadelphia’s Italian Market, and Queen Village. Restaurant-wise, locations included Ishkabibble’s for a Philly cheesesteak and Fante’s Kitchen Shop. And the Philly connection goes deeper than just location—it includes the people, too. Philadelphia-born basketball players Dr. J and Kyle Lowry, as well as Philly rappers Beanie Sigel, Freeway, and Tierra Whack, are all featured in Hustle. And of course, there are the cameos from players from the Philadelphia 76ers, including Allen Iverson, As Zagar said in the press notes interview, “It’s really a smorgasbord of Philadelphia legends.”

Netflix Life reports the cast and crew began filming in Pennsylvania’s largest city in 2020. Those familiar with the area will likely catch and recognise a wide array of locations in the state, including Coatesville Area High School and Center City, Philadelphia. The Italian Market and Market Street also make it into the final cut, while other sequences moved things over to the likes of South Philadelphia and Manayunk. If you’re wondering where they filmed the introductory scenes that are set in Spain, you’re right, that’s definitely not Philly. Those sequences were captured on location in Mallorca.

Needless to say, the subject of the film is essentially woven into Hustle’s very DNA.
