GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Irish on Ionia, a St. Patrick’s Day themed street party in downtown Grand Rapids, has been canceled again because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event’s organizer, BarFly, announced the cancelation Jan. 18. “Due to our current status of the pandemic in relation to mass gatherings and the public health considerations of our city, we have no choice but to cancel IOI (Irish on Ionia) again this year,” according to a post on the event’s Facebook page. “We are working cooperatively with our city partners and local health officials to consider a street party in the future when it is safe.” While the pandemic is easing in Michigan, the state was in a very different spot when Irish on Ionia was canceled in January. At that time, new COVID-19 cases in the state was reaching record highs as the omicron variant tore through the state. This year marks the third time Irish on Ionia has been canceled since the coronavirus pandemic hit Michigan in March 2020. BarFly could not be reached for comment prior to publication.
