Mastercool Maintenance & Service

Maintenance for Mastercool coolers is similar to standard coolers. They are both evaporative coolers but mastercools/aerocools but there are some differences when it comes to maintaining them for summer and shutting them down for winter. TLC’s cooling experts are experienced and qualified to maintain these types of coolers.

Pad Replacement

There is only pad with mastercools, unlike standard coolers. Unlike standard coolers, you don’t need to replace the pad every year. You can replace it every 2-3 years. These type of pads tend to collect hard water buildup over the years.

Distribution Tube

You need to make sure that the distribution tube is clear and free of debris. If this gets clogged with mineral buildup the pad won’t get wet and you’ll be blowing hot air into your home.

Removing Calcium Buildup

Your cooler should be cleaned thoroughly before you start it up for spring. Remove hard water buildup throughout the unit and we recommend replacing the float every year.

Mastercool Upgrade and Installation

Mastercool or Aerocool evaporative coolers can typically provide greater cooling ability than your standard swamp cooler. The difference between standard and Mastercool coolers are based on the following features:
TLC’s professional technicians are qualified to install all types of air conditioners. You can count on TLC to provide you with cooling options that meet your comfort needs and budget. There are many options available to you when it comes to your cooling. Talk to our HVAC professionals about upgrading to Mastercool or even Breezair which is the most efficient swamp cooler available on the market. We always offer free no-obligation estimates and will gladly review your options with you.

Cooler Temperatures

Mastercooler coolers typically get a greater indoor temperature difference than standard coolers, sometimes up to 15° degrees difference. Mastercools get cooler temperatures than standard coolers because of their unique design. They only have one pad which is a unique design that holds more water. Because the pads can hold more water the fan can usually push through cooler temperatures into the home.

Energy Efficient Coolers

Mastercool units tend to be more energy-efficient than standard coolers because of their cooling abilities and unique media. The unique design allows for more water to be absorbed and retained in the pads vs. thinner standard pads. Also, something else to consider is that mastercools use up to 75% less energy than refrigerated air conditioning.

Mastercool Pads

Mastercools have a unique pad called rigid media. This durable cardboard like media varies from 8” to 12” thick and has a honeycomb design to absorb more water than standard coolers and pads. These pads can provide greater cooling ability and increased efficiency because they can hold the water in the pads.

We are considering renting a house in El Paso that has a mastercool swamp cooler but I'm a little concerned about how well they actually work. I've heard that swamp coolers do pretty much nothing once it gets above 95 with even the slightest humidity. However, I've also heard that Mastercool swamp coolers are a lot better than most and are almost as good as refrigerated air. Anyone out there able to speak on any of this?

I wouldnt say they are as good as Refrigerated air, but the do work better than normal swamp coolers. I remember when my school back in the day switched from normal swamp coolers to Master Cools and we could definitely notice a difference.
But recently in my house we switched from normal swamp coolers to refrigerated air. I'm glad I did.

I replaced my swamp cooler and it was better. Once the heat goes above the 100 it is not as good but still bearable. With ceiling fans and a master cooler we are fine even though we have my mother-in-law. She is 90 and does not complain about the weather having a master cooler. We do have a couple of refrigerated air window units in our bedrooms. At times we do not turn on the swamp cooler when we are not doing much in the rest of the house so we just use the window unit. So a combination of ceiling fans, master cooler, and window unit, we do fine, take care.

I am eliminating the 2 swamp coolers that I currently have and replacing them with refrigerated air. I had the option of going with master cools, but since I am spending the money might as well go the extra mile. Once it heats up I know I will be glad I spent the extra money.

These cooling units (master cool) require constant air flow. You will have to leave a few windows open for them to cool properly. Since it has been warm the last few weeks its kind of giving El Pasoans an idea of what's to come. I'm really not looking forward to it.

We had regular 4 sided swamp coolers in the house when we moved in. They had not been taken care of and were pretty bad. Later, switched to Master Cools. They did better than the swamps. We switched to Ref. about 6 years ago and never regretted it. You still got to take care of them but they are not nearly the pain of the old swamp coolers. The lime crud still is a problem, especially on the Westside.

King's Air is who we used. I was happy with them and the price was fair. We also had to replace a forced air furnace. Fortunately, our duct work was workable. BTW, it was the same price to have them put on the ground as having a crane put them up on the roof. I don't like climbing around on the roof as it can be dangerous and it is bad for the shingles. Never regretted that decision as well. Hopes this helps.

I think it depends on how high you want your electric bill to be. It's only humid for about 2 weeks here, El Paso is arid. And if you have a couple shade trees and leave windows open, you don't need air conditioning at all, it's nicer without that constant background hum.

Evaporative air cooling goes back a few thousand years. It is a simple device that cools air through the evaporation of water. Want to test the theory of operation? On a hot day get naked, wrap a wet towel around your body and run around outside. Feel yourself getting cooler?

It is not "almost as good as refrigerated air"

The Mastercool brand tends to work a bit better because when people replace their old beat up, rusty, leaking unit with a new unit, it always seems to work better. The Mastercool do use a rigid thick water pad which tends to fit more securely and a lot of air does not go around the pads like old sagging ones... But the pads are more expensive...

Ugh! TRUST ME! We were relocated here a year ago and the first house our company leased for us had a swamp cooler. We'd never seen one and didn't know to ask when we leased the house. There will be many days when the thing will not even come close to catching up with the heat! Just blowing air at you that made its way past water is NOT air conditioning. The house never got cooler than the low 80's in the summer no matter how much "moist" air was BLASTING in our faces.
