Is Blue Buffalo okay for kittens?

After Blue Buffalo recalled some of their cat and dog food products on several occasions, many pet parents started avoiding their wet and dry foods.

That was a great loss, because Blue offers high quality cat food that is not only nutritious, but also at a decent mid-range price point. And we all need more cat foods that satisfy feline dietary requirements without breaking the bank.

Today I’ll walk through my thoughts on Blue Buffalo’s foods for adult cats and kittens and give you some insight on their best stuff.

I’m sure some of you are already cringing from reading the word “recall,” but that’s not a reason to rule out this brand at all! In fact, here are just some of the many reasons you should try it out the next time you want to boost your beloved furball’s diet:

  • Affordable price
  • Recipes with real meat
  • Completely grain-free
  • Well-balanced formulas with fruits and veggies
  • Packed with essential proteins
  • Diverse kitten, adult, and senior cat formulas

Yes, Blue Buffalo has had to recall some foods on numerous occasions throughout the years. But they recalled only one series of cat food in 2007 and one series of cat foods and treats in 2015. Their most recent recall, in 2017, only affected dog foods with beef meat formulas. The cat products were recalled for high levels of melamine and some low traces of propylene glycol.

I know many people with a zero-tolerance policy for recalls, and I get that. But I also know what it’s like to be working with the manufacturing process, especially with food ingredients, which makes it a much more difficult ball game. For producing so much food and being around for awhile, it’s amazing to me that there haven’t been more issues.

Now, if you don’t share my sense of amazement at this feat of industry, I absolutely understand and suggest you pick another food from our top cat foods page here.

Regardless of the recalls, I want to share with you my top picks of Blue’s cat foods and tell you a little bit about why I can still recommend buying their products for our kitties.

Reviews Of Blue Buffalo’s Best Dry Cat Foods

Blue offers a plethora of tasty recipes with real meat for kittens, adult cats, and seniors alike. What’s more, they have some dietary foods for obese cats, as well as formulas for hairball control. These are all of the manufacturer’s cat food series:

  • Weight Management
  • Grain Free
  • Food Sensitive
  • Limited Ingredients
  • Indoor
  • Multi-Cat
  • High Protein
  • Hairball Control

As I mentioned before, this brand is extremely diverse when it comes to food formulas for kitties. That also applies to flavors. You and your fluffy friend can choose from beef, chicken, venison, lamb, duck, red meat, turkey, fish, rabbit, tuna, salmon, trout, and shrimp. And the best part is that these foods offer real meat, not some fillers and meat by-products.

Here are my favorite dry cat foods from Blue Buffalo’s varied arsenal:

Blue Freedom With Chicken For Kittens

Is Blue Buffalo okay for kittens?

Kittens need nutritious meals in order to grow and thrive into adulthood. The Blue Freedom Grain Free formula for kittens meets all of a young furball’s dietary requirements.

Packed with real deboned chicken, it lacks any fillers, grains, or meat by-products.

It features tons of healthy nutrients like carrots, cranberries, sweet potatoes, and other similar superfoods for cats. One of the many things I love about this formula is that it’s not only tasty, but also promotes muscle and tissue development and boosts energy levels.

In other words, this cat food formula not only helps your kitten grow and evolve, but also keeps it energized and playful.

And here comes the best part – it’s actually quite affordable! Pet parents of young kittens know how pricey healthcare, cat furniture, and other expenses can be. So, if you’re one of them and you don’t want to blow a fortune on high quality cat food, this holistic kitten food is a great option for you.

It also comes in a canned option, which you can find here, if you prefer.

Blue Freedom With Chicken For Adults

Is Blue Buffalo okay for kittens?

I’m just as happy with Blue Freedom’s chicken formula for kittens as I am with the chicken formula for adult indoor cats.

It’s similar to the kitten formula in terms of well-balanced ingredients and antioxidants. However, it’s formulated specifically for adult cats, which have different dietary requirements than their younger counterparts.

The Freedom formula is extremely rich in natural proteins from deboned chicken meat and sweet potatoes. It has tons of fiber, amino acids, and a vast variety of vitamins and minerals. It aids your beloved furball’s physical health while keeping it happy and satisfied with the kibble’s delicious taste.

Chicken meat is actually one of the best sources of protein, selenium, phosphorus, vitamin B6, and other nutrients. All of these things are absolutely crucial for any feline out there. Blue offers not only real chicken meat, but also a diversity of other ingredients too. The nutritional value, along with the moderate price tag, is why I like it so much.

Blue Wilderness With Duck For Adult Cats

Is Blue Buffalo okay for kittens?

If you’re looking to spice up your feline friend’s everyday diet, I’d definitely recommend the Blue Wilderness formula with duck meat for adult cats.

Packed with antioxidants like cranberries, blueberries, apples, pomegranate, and spinach, this recipe already sounds delicious. But once you add the deboned duck to it, trust me, even the finickiest kitty out there will fall in love!

Rich in vitamins, minerals, Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, protein, and fiber – you definitely need to try it out!

I only wish it was more affordable so that more pet parents could treat their furballs with it. As such, I won’t recommend it as an everyday diet all year-round, unless you’re willing to spend a small fortune on monthly basis. But it’s absolutely worth it if you want to use it every now and then and lend some variety to your cat’s normal diet.

Reviews Of Blue Buffalo’s Best Wet Canned Cat Foods

Feline furballs can’t thrive solely on dry kibble. They don’t have a strong natural sense of dehydration, unlike humans or dogs. Thus, they need to get some fluids from the moisture in wet canned cat foods.

Many low quality cat food manufacturers use tons of salt in their recipes in order to extend shelf life. Blue Buffalo doesn’t do that! Their wet cat foods are healthy and offer a plethora of well-balanced ingredients, which are essential for your pet’s well-being.

Here are my top picks out of their numerous formulas for kittens and adult cats:

Blue’s Healthy Gourmet with Chicken for Adults

Is Blue Buffalo okay for kittens?

The main stars of this recipe are chicken meat, chicken liver, and chicken broth. The formula is also packed with varied vitamins (E, D3, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9), Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and lots of minerals.

What my cats adore in the moist Meaty Morsels formula is the perfectly balanced texture – not too flaky or paste-like.

Of course, we all know each kitty  is unique. As such, I can’t really tell you if your pet will adore the texture of this formula, but you should still give it a try. The real meat, antioxidant-rich fruits, and fiber-rich vegetables are crucial for every indoor cat. Overall, this wet cat food is moist, healthy, holistic, and delicious.

Plus, you can get it in a variety of other flavors too. If your kitty isn’t into the morsels, opt for the flaked chicken or the pate.

Downsides Of Blue Buffalo’s Cat Foods

I’ve mentioned so many advantages of Blue Buffalo’s wet and dry cat foods. Now it’s time to focus on the things I don’t like when it comes to this manufacturer.

  • Not enough moisture. Even though canned cat food features significantly more fluids than dry kibble, Blue Buffalo’s really moist foods are only from their Tasty Morsels series. Unlike some wet canned cat foods that offer up to 80 percent moisture, Blue Buffalo’s Tasty Morsels are rather semi-moist. Nevertheless, your pet won’t suffer from dehydration with these series.
  • Lack of variety in wet food for senior cats. I really wish the manufacturer had more options for canned cat food for senior furballs. Their recipes are highly nutritious and use high quality ingredients.
  • A number of recalls. Blue Buffalo has had to recall mainly dog foods on numerous occasions. And now many pet parents worry about buying cat food, as a result.

Despite these downsides, I’d still recommend Blue Buffalo’s foods to kitten, adult, and senior pet parents everywhere, even if it’s just for some diversity and not a substitute to your kitty’s regular diet. It’s worth every dime!

And remember to buy it from Chewy.com. Not only do they have AMAZING customer service (they literally seem to love your cat as much as you do), but they’ll give you 20% off your first autoship order with them. Shop Blue Buffalo on Chewy.com.
