Is Kali in Stranger Things good

In 2017, Netflix released the second season of Stranger Things, the streamer's most-watched series to date. The show's sophomore season received highly positive reviews and was a success overall. However, the season produced one of the lowest-rated episodes of all time in which they introduced a key character from Eleven's (Millie Bobby Brown) past. The character was that of her “sister,” who was also experimented on by Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) but who escaped long before Eleven. However, that’s the last the character is seen, and viewers wonder why that is.

In the episode titled “The Lost Sister,” viewers were introduced to Kali/Eight (Linnea Berthelsen). Kali, who can conjure images in others' minds, lives on the streets with a gang who hates Brenner just as much as Eleven does. Throughout the episode, Kali teaches Eleven how to hone her abilities, and the two begin to bond. However, that bond is short-lived before El makes her way back to Hawkins and leaves her “sister.”

This is the last Kali is seen in the series, except for a brief mention and flashback in season four. However, fans are left to wonder why Eight is never shown in any other flashbacks in the newest season, especially since it so heavily deals with Eleven’s time at Brenner’s facility. Many other “siblings” of Eleven are shown, but Kali is referred to minimally. Fans have already begun to speculate what this could mean for the character and her place in the show.

Vecna/Kali Fan Theories

In season four of the nostalgia-infused Netflix series, Eleven undergoes a hypnosis treatment in order to regain her abilities. In this treatment, Brenner sends her back through her memories, and viewers get a glimpse of her time at the facility she spent most of her childhood. Here, the audience can see, as the episodes reveal, the differing abilities of the children at Hawkins National Laboratory. There is Ten, a kind kid who has the ability of telepathy, which is showcased fairly early on in the season. Two is also introduced. However, he is shown to be quite a bully and champion at Brenner’s circle game, where he gets the children to use their powers on one another. Finally, viewers are introduced to One, an incredibly powerful individual with a mean sociopathic streak. But where does Kali fit in all this?

One explanation for Kali not appearing in the memories in season four could be that Brenner is controlling the flow of Eleven’s memories in the experiment in order to keep her on track to regain her abilities. Kali also seems to have escaped prior to the triggering events Eleven is flashing back to. However, this doesn’t seem to be enough of an explanation for Stranger Things fans, as one tweeted:

“I can not be the only one who expected Eight, the sister of Eleven from a previous season, to appear on Season 4. It seems [like] a major plot hole to me.”

Some fans have theorized that Kali could be connected to Vecna, the fourth season's main villain. This is due to the similarities the two have involving mind manipulation. Vecna is able to make people see things that aren’t there, much like Kali can, including spiders, which have been shown to make their victims seem like a threat. While Vecna appears entirely more powerful than Kali, the similarity has led many fans to assume that this means Kali will be important in the defeat of Vecna.

One fan noted the scene in season four where Dustin gets an 11 in the Hellfire Club’s game against Vecna in D&D, stating,

“Thinking about how Erica’s attack that defeated Vecna in the DnD game was a 20. 11 alone failed, but 011+008+001=020. Could it take El and Kali turning 001’s powers around on him to defeat Vecna in the end?”

Another remarked on the need for Kali’s return:

"Since the only surviving Hawkins Lab’s kids are One, Eleven, and Eight, that means Kali HAS to come back. [I don’t care] how much people disliked her, she was integral to El’s growth and can help stop Vecna (and by extension, Dr. Brenner).”

The Possibility of Kali's Return

While only two episodes of season four are left, the two have been revealed to be feature-length episodes, providing more than enough time for the “lost sister” to be brought back into the fold. However, if she does not make an appearance, Eight could always reappear in the show's fifth and final season.

Back in 2017, the Duffers (who created the hit series) teased The Hollywood Reporter in an interview and said that it would be weird if they didn’t “solve [her] storyline,” and the “chances are very high she comes back.” So perhaps Eight will make a return to the series, but will it be sooner rather than later?

What was the point of Kali in Stranger Things?

The reason Kali's story is important, is because Stranger Things seems to be building up to her return. Kali was special—the only child with unique psychic powers. All of the other children in Hawkins Labs seem to be practically clones of 001 and all have the same telekinetic powers as him.

Will Kali help Eleven in Stranger Things?

While Kali's powers would seemingly be a major asset to Eleven's fight against Vecna in Stranger Things season 5, the series already revealed why she can't help defeat him. Kali, A.K.A. Eight, was the first of Eleven's “siblings” from Hawkins Lab to be introduced in Stranger Things.

Is Kali evil in Stranger Things?

She's also referred to as an "eradicator of evils." This plays so well into the role of Kali on Stranger Things. Here we have a character seeking justice for herself and the other children who suffered similar fates. She wants to take these evil men out of the world, and she literally bestows death on them.

Why does Eleven leave Kali?

In the way things actually played out, Eleven left because she believed she had no one to back her up. If Eleven had left simply to leave, that means she would've gone to see Kali simply to meet her old friend, nothing more. Because she does leave the way she does in the show, her going to see Kali means more.
