Is Pimp My Ride still on MTV?

In true rags to riches fashion, "Pimp My Ride" takes a young automotively-challenged fan and turns his/her bucket into a pimped out masterpiece.

With the help of celebrity car enthusiast, Xzibit, and world famous aftermarket shop West Coast Customs, who has pimped out cars for Shaquille O'Neal, 50 Cent, and Ludacris, "Pimp My Ride" takes a fan whose car is in serious need of an automotive makeover and transforms the less-than-luxurious ride into a tricked out triumph. From custom rims and paint, to plush interiors and lowered suspensions, to the latest in lighting, car audio and video accessories - one lucky fan is getting hooked up!

The makeover begins when hip-hop impresario and host Xzibit pays a surprise visit to a fan and takes the viewer on an amusing tour of the fan's "diamond in the rough," pointing out some of the "problem areas." Then, it's off to West Coast Customs, where the team strips down the car to its bare bones and completely refurbishes it. In a matter of days, the makeover is complete and the new ride will have been officially pimped!

Is Pimp My Ride still on MTV?

MTV's “Pimp My Ride” is making a comeback this month, albeit in the U.K. and without original host Xzibit.

Filling in for hosting duties will be British rapper Lady Leshurr, and it remains to be seen if she'll be able to match Xzibit's sublime mix of hilarity and goofiness that made the original so popular with car and non-car people alike.

Six episodes have been filmed and the first goes live on MTV UK's YouTube channel on August 19. The garage where the magic will happen is Wrench Studios, which is based in Ashford, U.K, and run by two brothers. Two cars that we know will be on the show are a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle and a 1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT.

There will be a new focus this time around, and that will be on the environment. The show will highlight the environmental benefits of do-it-yourself style mods using refurbished parts found on eBay's Certified Recycled Hub, which features used OEM parts. There will still be extreme modifications, we're told, so expect loud colors, crazy sound systems, and plenty of screens.

The original show, while a huge hit for MTV, was not without controversy. For example, there were certain mods only being added for filming but then removed, usually for safety reasons, or cars being modified to look cool but not actually drive well. Some owners also sold their cars soon after being handed back the keys.

Interestingly, there's been a number of spin-offs. There have been shows filmed in Brazil, France, Indonesia, and even a previous U.K. version that ran from 2005 to 2007 and featured British DJ Tim Westwood as the host.

Popular MTV show Pimp My Ride is about to make a surprise return after 15 years. The new version of the show will take place in the UK, hosted by British rapper Lady Leshurr. The first episode of the six-part series is set to premiere on August 19 on MTV UK’s YouTube channel.

The original US-based Pimp My Ride series, broadcasted from 2004 to 2007, was hosted by American rapper Xzibit, with the majority of the seasons shot at West Coast Customs creating a stir among tuning enthusiasts. The new installment hopes to become as popular, with a new team comprising of British rapper Lady Leshurr and Surrey-based Wrench Studios.

Besides a sneak peek into the project cars and their owners, the trailer introduces us to the new host and gives us a good idea of the Wrench Studios shop which is filled with exotics. Interestingly the series retains the original theme song.

The new Pimp My Ride won’t be limited to restoring old cars by adding flashy bits and upgrading their sound systems with multiple screens, but it will also focus on “recycled green parts”, following the latest trend in the automotive industry. We hope that the UK series will be less sloppy than the US version, after the complaints of car owners that participated in previous seasons.

The two brothers running Wrench Studios are declared fans of the original Pimp My Ride and hope to continue its legacy. Talking about the new installment, Hamid Iqbal, CEO of Wrench Studios said: “we’re going to make sure it lives up to expectations”. The team will “pimp” used vehicles such as a classic 1966 VW Beetle and a 1992 Mitsubishi GTO inspired by Fast and Furious. The parts for the conversions will be sourced from eBay’s marketplace in the UK.

The goal of the producers is to encourage more people to join the DIY philosophy and, of course, promote the eBay marketplace. According to a recent study, 69 percent of people who bought car parts and accessories from the platform were planning to fit them themselves, representing a 32 percent increase compared to seven years ago. Until the new Pimp My Ride show premieres, here’s a nostalgic clip from the original.
