Amarillo ISD Weather Policy

In the event school must be cancelled due to inclement weather, the decision to close school will be made by 6:00 a.m. If the decision is made to close school it will be communicated to the local media and posted on this website as soon as possible after 6:00 a.m. Staff, students, and parents are advised to listen to local radio and television stations, as well as to check this website for current news about school closings due to inclement weather.

If the normal school schedule is followed but there is inclement weather, staff, students, and parents are urged to use caution when traveling to school. Be safe and take your time.

Thursday afternoon update: 

BSA Urgent Care Center at 45th & Bell will close at 5 p.m. today.

Adrian ISD will start at 10 am on Friday, February 4. Buses will run two hours late.

Amarillo ISD: "Amarillo ISD will delay the start of school until 10 a.m. tomorrow–Friday, February 4, 2022. Students will report at 10 a.m and staff should arrive as early as they can. This is especially important for our hourly employees who may be hoping to get in a full day of hours. Delaying the start of school tomorrow helps us address safety in the low temperatures while meeting the needs of our students who are food insecure. Opening schools tomorrow ensures they have an opportunity to receive meals at school and can take home Snack Pak for the weekend. If a parent/guardian feels they need to keep their child home because of the weather please make sure they know we will support them in that decision. Please be safe as you head out tomorrow morning."

Booker ISD will have a 10 a.m. start on Friday, Feb. 4. No buses.

Borger ISD will have a two-hour delayed start on Friday, February 4.  Buses will run two hours late.

Bovina ISD will begin classes at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 4.  Buses will run two hours late.

Boys Ranch ISD school will delay two hours. Start at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4.

Bushland ISD will have a 10 a.m. start Friday, February 4. Buses will run two hours later than normal.

Canadian ISD classes will start at 10 a.m., and buses will run two hours late tomorrow, 2/4. 

Canyon ISD will begin classes 1 hour late on Friday February 4, 2022.  Buses will run one hour late. 

Channing ISD will have a two-hour delayed start and buses will run two hours late on Friday.

Childress ISD will cancel classes for Friday, February 4.

Clarendon CISD will start at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4. Buses will run two hours later than usual.

Claude ISD will begin classes at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 4. Buses will run two hours late.

Dalhart ISD will open two hours late on Friday. Buses will run two hours late.

Darrouzett ISD will start at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 4. Buses will run two hours late.

Due to continued extreme cold and hazardous travel, Groom ISD will start school at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 4. Buses will run two hours later than normal.

Happy ISD will delay buses and the beginning of school by one hour on Friday, Feb. 4. 

Hart ISD will begin school at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 4.  Buses will run two hours late.

Pringle-Morse CISD will start school at 10 a.m. on February 4. Buses will run accordingly.

River Road ISD: "Due to Extreme Wind Chills and Road Conditions in the River Road Area, it is in the best interest of our students and staff to close schools for Friday, February 4, 2022.  Classes will resume on Monday, February 7, 2022."

Sanford-Fritch ISD will have a 10 a.m. start. Buses will run two hours later than normal.

Shamrock ISD will start at 10 a.m. Friday, February 4.  Buses will run two hours late in town only

Stratford ISD: "In an effort to maintain the safety & well-being of our @stratfordisd scholars/staff we will have classes at the regular time but will run the buses one hour late on Friday, Feb. 4. We will continue to monitor weather conditions and keep you posted."

Texhoma ISD will start at 10 a.m. Friday, February 4. Buses will run two hours late. 

Texline ISD will have a one-hour delay on Friday, Feb 4, due to extreme cold. 

Due to inclement weather, freezing temperatures, and hazardous road conditions, Tulia ISD will cancel school on Friday, February 4.

Turkey-Quitaque ISD will cancel classes for Friday, February 4.

Vega ISD will start at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 4. Buses will run two hours late.

Walcott will start at 9 a.m. Friday, February 4.

Wellington ISD will start at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4.  Buses will run two hours late on pavement only.

Wheeler ISD will be delayed and start classes at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 4. Buses will run in town only.

White Deer ISD will have a 10 a.m. school start on Friday, Feb. 4. Buses will run two hours late.

Wildorado ISD will have a 10 a.m. start. Buses will run two hours later than normal. 

The Canyon/Tascosa Speech and Debate Tournament that was scheduled to take place at Tascosa High School this weekend has been moved to Feb. 18-19.

Region 16 will start tomorrow at 10 a.m., Friday, February 4. Tomorrow dress to keep yourself warm. 

All DPS offices located in the Amarillo District (top 26 counties) will be delayed opening tomorrow, Feb. 4, until 10 a.m. Counties: Armstrong, Briscoe, Carson, Castro, Childress, Collingsworth, Dallam, Deaf Smith, Donley, Gray, Hall, Hansford, Hartley, Hemphill, Hutchinson, Lipscomb, Moore, Ochiltree, Oldham, Parmer, Potter, Randall, Roberts, Sherman, Swisher, and Wheeler.

Thursday morning update: 

Several schools and businesses have announced they are closed for the day due to inclement weather. 

The city of Amarillo writes on social media: "Due to the snow and extremely cold temperatures, City of Amarillo facilities are closed to the public today. The closure includes the Amarillo Public Health drive through testing center and infusion site. The Amarillo transit system will continue to operate as normally scheduled, and street crews will continue to work throughout the day to manage roads. All Municipal Court dockets set for today will be rescheduled. Notice will be sent for the rescheduled docket after the City reopens."

Also via Facebook: "Due to hazardous road conditions and forecast for continued snowfall, Palo Duro Canyon State Park will be closed today 2/3/22. The park will re-open as soon as it’s safe to do so, so check back here or our Facebook page for the latest!"

The Amarillo Independent School District announced it will be closing Thursday, Feb. 3 due to inclement weather.

Adrian ISD is canceling school for Thursday, February 3rd due to poor weather conditions.

Due to continued bad weather, dangerous road conditions, and sub zero wind chill temperatures Booker ISD is canceling school tomorrow. Thursday (2-3-22)

Borger ISD will be closed on Thursday, February 3rd.

Bovina ISD is cancelling classes for Thursday, February 3, 2022 due to extreme weather conditions.

Tulia writes: "Due to inclement weather and extremely cold temperatures, Tulia ISD will cancel school on Thursday, February 3, 2022. We will continue monitoring weather conditions and provide notifications as soon as possible regarding any further delay or cancellation this week. Your safety is important to us, so please avoid travel if possible and stay safe and warm."

Turkey-Quitaque ISD classes are canceled for Thursday, February 3, 2022. 

Due to extreme weather conditions Vega ISD will be closed on Thursday February 3, 2022.

Wildorado ISD will be closed February 3, 2022 due to extreme weather conditions.  

Other closings include: 

Region 16 will be closed Thursday, February 3rd, due to poor weather conditions. UIL realignment meeting at Region 16 will take place at normal time. Districts that cannot make the meeting may join via Zoom.

The West Texas A&M University campuses in Canyon and Amarillo will be closed Thursday, Feb. 3, for inclement weather. All classes are canceled.

WBU Plainview weather closure: Due to inclement weather, dangerously cold temperatures and hazardous driving conditions for our commuter students and employees, all face-to-face classes at the Wayland Plainview campus are canceled for Feb. 3.  WBU Plainview campus offices will also be closed. Students, please check Blackboard for any assignments.

The Texas Department of Public Safety writes: "All DPS offices located in the Amarillo District will be delayed opening this morning until 10:00 a.m. Counties with DPS offices include: Armstrong, Briscoe, Carson, Castro, Childress, Collingsworth, Dallam, Deaf Smith, Donley, Gray, Hall, Hansford, Hartley, Hemphill, Hutchinson, Lipscomb, Moore, Ochiltree, Oldham, Parmer, Potter, Randall, Roberts, Sherman, Swisher, and Wheeler. If you do not need to be out on the roads, stay home. If you do need to get out, give yourself plenty of time to get to where you are going, and keep plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you so you will have time to react. Slow down prior to reaching stop intersections to avoid sliding into the intersection and slow down prior to making turns. Please be patient and drive safely!"

Due to inclement weather, the following BSA clinics will be closed Thursday, February 3: ADC Endoscopy, Amarillo Surgical Group, BSA Amarillo Diagnostic Clinic, BSA Harrington Breast Center, BSA Harrington Cancer Center, BSA Outpatient Therapy Services, BSA Panhandle Ear, Nose & Throat, BSA Advanced Wound Care.

Earlier: 

The city of Amarillo announced on Wednesday afternoon via Facebook that it is working closely with several agencies to monitor the inclement weather situation and is preparing for the continued freezing precipitation and snow.

The Public Works department is staging equipment and personnel for a timely response as the event develops. No impacts to operations to city operations for Thursday at this time, but the city will continue to monitor the weather situation to ensure the safety of its employees and community.

In addition, due to today’s inclement weather and predicted additional snowfall, all Amarillo Public Libraries will close at 6 p.m. Potential closings for Thursday have not been determined.

River Road was one of dozens of area school districts to announce two-hour delays for Thursday:  

Booker ISD will release students early today at 2 p.m. Tomorrow (Feb. 3) Classes will begin at 10 a.m. No buses.

Borger ISD will have a two-hour delayed start on Thursday, Feb. 3.  Buses will run two hours late.

Classes at Bovina ISD will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3. Buses will run two hours late.

Boys Ranch will cancel school today and start two hours late Thursday, Feb. 3.

Channing ISD’s classes are canceled for Wednesday, February, 2nd.

Panhandle ISD will begin school at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3.

Our park will be open; however we may close our hill leading into the canyon in the presence of snow and ice.
