Is Sokka and Zuko same age?

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been worried about the Netflix remake ever since the original creators — Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino — left the project, citing an inability to control the creative direction of the series. Now, The Illuminerdi gives us a glimpse of the kind of thing they may have been talking about.

Before we go any further, mind that this isn’t gospel. The Illuminerdi has been right when it’s gotten scoops before, but it’s also been wrong.

Still, it’s right often enough for us to talk about it. So what does the new report say? That Sokka and Katara, who are 15 and 14 years old in the much-beloved Nickelodeon series, are being changed to 16 and 14 in the Netflix remake. This would make Sokka the younger brother when he used to be the older. Aang, the titular last airbender (and the titular Avatar) will still be 12…although I guess he was frozen in ice for 100 years when Katara and Sokka find him in the first episode, so technically he’ll stay 112.

If true, this decision seems…odd. We’d heard before that Netflix may be considering changing the characters’ ages, but I assumed that meant they wanted to age all of them up to avoid the unpredictability of working with child actors. But this just seems like changing the ages round in arbitrary ways that alter the group dynamic. For instance, in the original show, Aang and Katara have a very chaste romance subplot, which is cute when one of them is 12 and the other 14. But at 12 and 16? At that age a couple of years makes a big difference.

Also, it ruins the irony of Katara being younger than Sokka but being the responsible “mom” of the family, having stepped into the role when their own mother was killed by the Fire Nation. In fact, I wonder if Netflix changed the ages of the siblings to give Sokka license to be more immature and Katara to be stern and grown-up, missing that the disparity was part of what made the characters interesting in the first place.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender remake may have a new showrunner

The Illuminerdi also reports that the remake has a new showrunner in place of Konietzko and DiMartino: Albert Kim, a veteran of shows like Leverage, Nikita and Sleepy Hollow. He’ll have his work cut out for him convincing fans that this is a series to get excited about, but we’re still hoping for the best:

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender is now on Netflix.
  • The series follows Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and many other younger characters.
  • Here's how old every character is in the series.

When you first caught Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender in 2005, you probably thought you were watching a group of young adults venture across the Four Nations; when you’re a kid, everyone who’s not a kid just seems older. (Wasn’t Katara, like, a high schooler?) But the actual ages of Team Avatar—Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph—probably weren’t too far from your own. Unless, of course, you didn’t first watch Avatar until you were an adult. In that case: good for you.

For everyone else living frozen in an ice block for the last 15 years, you can now watch the greatest animated show of all time, which recently arrived on Netflix, for the first time. (Oh how we eleventh-time viewers envy you.)

Watching as an adult, however, might lead to some kissing confusion when you realize these beloved childhood heroes are actually, you know, children. (And then later, watching The Legend of Korra, when you realize some of them go on to make babies with each other … gross.)

How old are these kids?

The events of the series take place over a full calendar year, beginning with Aang’s defrosting in the year 99.

The events are marked “BG” (“before the Air Nomad Genocide”) and after, “AG.” Aang was confirmed as the Avatar in the year 0, during which time he fled and was frozen. (The genocide took place soon after his departure.)

Episode 1 picks up during 99 AG, almost a hundred years since Aang’s disappearance and toward the tail end of the hundred year’s war, which Fire Lord Sozin began using the power of a comet (“Sozin’s Comet”).

No birthday celebrations take place among the principle cast of the series, though we can probably tack a year onto each of the characters by the time the show wraps up in Book 3.

Here are the ages of the show’s major characters.

Aang (112 / 12)

Aang is technically 112, having been encased in ice for a hundred years. His preserved body, however, is still one of a small boy. All of which makes his and Katara's will-they-won't-they romance a little ... weird?

Toph (12)

The same age as Aang, Toph could probably kick his butt, Avatar-ness aside.

Katara (14)

Nickelodeon

Maybe not as old as you once thought, Katara is about the age of an eighth grader.

Azula (14)

Azula is definitely not the age you assumed. Though the series gives the character a more psychopathic sketch, Azula is still just a kid. Still, kids can be psychopaths.

Sokka (15)

Nickelodeon

He's the character most explicitly fighting the vocal battles of puberty. Poor Sokka.

Zuko (16)

The series' oldest major character, Zuko, is caught directly between youth an adulthood, his uncle and his father, and one angsty head of hair and another.
