Xylitol is a naturally occuring sweetener that inhibits the growth of Strepococcus mutans, this is one of the bacteria that cause cavities. When Xylitol is present in the mouth, the bacteria that cause cavities cannot attach onto the teeth stopping the cavity causing process.
