Now, the pickup is ready to play ball. The latest full-size pickup truck is competitive and comes with plenty of new features and options. It’s the first Tundra model year to offer a hybrid powertrain. Does the 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid get good gas mileage, or is it too good to be true?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid’s gas mileage is surprising

If you were expecting the Toyota Tundra Hybrid to get mind-blowing fuel economy like the Ford Maverick Hybrid, then there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that the Toyota Tundra Hybrid is an improvement from the horrible fuel economy that the Tundras of yesteryear had. The bad news is, the Tundra Hybrid is hardly the most fuel-efficient model in its vehicle segment.

Kiss any hopes of a Tundra with close to 30 MPG combined goodbye. The Tundra Hybrid isn’t necessarily a gas guzzler, but it doesn’t exactly sip fuel either. Its fuel economy is decent at best. According to Car and Driver, the hybrid pickup truck gets 22 miles per gallon combined. Cool?

Luckily for Toyota, there’s a happy byproduct of the inclusion of a hybrid powertrain in the Tundra: a massive power boost. The Tundra’s standard twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine makes 389 horses. The Tundra Hybrid’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine and electric motor system make a whopping 437 horses and 583 lb-ft of torque.

The hybrid powertrain system gives the Tundra an additional 48 horses. That’s plenty of giddyup, so better fuel economy isn’t the only reason to pick the hybrid over the gas-powered Tundra.

How much does the 2022 Toyota Tundra cost?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra starts at $35,950. It’s significantly more expensive than rivals like the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.

The latest Tundra comes in seven different trim levels. The Capstone final trim level starts at $74,230. Car and Driver recommends the SR5 second trim level for consumers.

The new Tundra is pricey compared to its greatest rivals, but it provides much more value than older Tundra model years.

Is the 2022 Tundra worth it?

Is the new Toyota Tundra the best in its vehicle segment? The short answer is no. It is more worthy of its high price tag than any other Tundra model in the last decade. So in that sense, sure, it’s worth the money.

There aren’t many reasons to buy Toyota’s pickup over a 2022 Ford F-150 or 2022 Ram 1500, but Toyota made a solid effort and deserves kudos for an exciting, refined, updated pickup. The Japanese automaker has proved that it seriously considers criticism from its fans and buyers and is willing to enact change when necessary.
