Peeling back the layers of the glitz and glamour of show business, Lucy and Desi dives into the duo’s groundbreaking work in television along with giving audiences a peek into their lives behind the scenes.

“They were true outsiders, and I think that you sense it when you’re watching them in the 1950s — that they were these two very skilled performers who were kind of ready,” Poehler said in an interview with Haper’s Bazaar. “I like to think of the project as two songs that were playing in different spaces, and when the mashup came together, it was like the best song ever. They were married and they did love each other, and that’s often not very interesting to watch. But with Lucy and Desi, there was just this real vibe and electricity between them.”

Poehler continued, “I also think that — [and] not to get too macro here — they represented a time in America that was very specific, a very post-war capitalist boom where gender roles were really entrenched, but America was changing. The simple idea that this woman was married to this Cuban band leader, and even though he seemed like the boss, she ran the show, and how they were equal partners in business for most of their lives — it was just really fascinating. So it talked about gender and economics and what makes an American — all this really big stuff that just was underneath just a funny show.”

If there’s any No.1 Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz fan out there, it’s the daughter of the infamous “I Love Lucy” couple, Lucie Arnaz.

She has long been the protector of her parent’s legacy. Arnaz herself is an actor and musician. Lucie Arnaz had involvement in several “I Love Lucy” related projects over the years. That is including the upcoming “Being the Ricardos” film with Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem.

Now, Arnaz is speaking out on the upcoming documentary film about Lucille Ball. The documentary feature is being directed by popular comedic actress, Amy Poehler. Ron Howard is one of the executive producers as well.

Howard’s work in classic television undoubtedly prepares him to fund and assist. After starring as Opie on “The Andy Griffith Show,” he went on to portray Richie Cunningham in “Happy Days.” That eventually led to an illustrious career as a director and producer, and his sights are now turned towards documenting Lucille Ball’s life.

Lucie Arnaz Talks About Upcoming Lucille Ball Documentary

The best part of it all — it’s got the Lucie Arnaz seal of approval as accurate and entertaining. Lucie Arnaz has a lot of control over her family’s archives, so it’s probably best to be on her good side.

“I haven’t seen it, so it’s hard to say, but I know it’ll be different. I think it’s going to be amazing. From what I’ve heard so far, and what I’ve seen them do, they’re really pulling out every stop. They are digging deeper than anybody I’ve ever known. I’ve opened up the archives to them pretty much more than I’ve ever given access to anybody, just because I trust these people. I met with them a lot before I said yes, and then I went, “OK, take it all. I trust you,” Lucie Arnaz said in a recent interview with Palm Springs Life.

Amy Poehler Upcoming Documentary

For Arnaz to say that this documentary is “digging deeper” is an interesting statement. There have been countless documentaries, books, and films related to Lucille Ball over the years. Somehow, this one has elements that will make it stand out from the crowd.

According to Deadline, the film will be about the professional and personal relationship between Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The film is really going to center itself around painting the story of Ball —the groundbreaking comedian that changed comedy forever.

Amy Poehler is a great fit. Seeing as she made her name on “Saturday Night Live” to “Parks and Recreation,” she knows comedy well. She then beginning directing and producing projects like “Moxie.” It’s hard to see where Poehler doesn’t fit the bill.

Apparently, the estate has provided never-before-seen archival footage that will be used for the movie.

“As television’s long-reigning ‘First Family’, Lucy and Desi blazed a revolutionary trail through the cultural landscape that laid the groundwork for so much of the entertainment industry as we now know it. They created so many television firsts – not only in their portrayal of a multi-ethnic marriage or Lucy’s on-air pregnancy but as the first woman to head a studio and the creators of television syndication. It’s such an incredibly rich, inspiring and entertaining story and we’re honored to bring it to the screen,” the Imagine Documentaries President Justin Wilkes said.

Is the Ricardos a true story?
