Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have signed a deal with video-sharing platform TikTok to become an official partner for short videos in China.

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich signed a new sponsorship agreement with social media platform TikTok earlier this week. The deal makes Douyin, officially known as TikTok outside China, an official Bayern Munich sponsor with the club aiming to increase their engagement with fans. Bayern Munich players Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller already boast a strong presence on the video-focused social network, and the Bavarian giants will now look to increase their already expansive social media presence with the new partnership.

In an official club statement, the Bavarian giants announced TikTok as a Bayern Munich official sponsor. According to Bayern's club statement, this is TikTok's first partnership with a football club. Bayern Munich sponsor TikTok specialises in short-form content, with several million worldwide users sharing video clips of a maximum length of 15 seconds with other users. Users can post short clips with a maximum length of 15 seconds in portrait format with their mobile phone and creatively compose them with music, sounds and filters.

With Bayern Munich sponsor TikTok, The Bavarian giants aim to implement a clear, long-term plan in China for the fans, with the club also opening its office in Shanghai in 2016. Ye Jueming, head of Douyin Sports, said that as the Bayern Munich official sponsor, the company aims to produce great content about the club and Bayern Munich players in the future. The company signed the deal to become a Bayern Munich official sponsor just ahead of the Bundesliga return.

Bayern Munich sponsor TikTok could cash in on the presence of Thomas Muller and Rober Lewandowski on TikTok. The Bayern stars have been active on the video-focused social network throughout the lockdown and have garnered a number of followers through their interactive content. Bayern Munich's official Douyin account set up in July 2018 now has nearly 800,000 followers. The account was launched prior to a clash with Borussia Dortmund has already experienced over half a million video views. The account will allow users to access exclusive Bayern video clips and special filters designed to increase fan engagement without creating a TikTok profile.

German football giant, Bayern Munich, have announced a partnership with the parent company of TikTok and the club’s fans aren’t best pleased.

It cannot be denied that TikTok has exploded in popularity in recent years.

The video-sharing social media site went from an unknown entity a few years ago but is now one of the biggest of its kind in the world with an estimated 800 million users as of April 2020.

Bayern Munich is another name that people around the world will recognise. As one of the most successful football teams in Europe, the Bavarian side has followers in all corners of the globe.

And now, both Bayern and TikTok’s parent company, Douyin, have agreed to a new partnership between the respective brands.

Bayern Munich agree partnership with TikTok

It was announced on May 14th, 2020 that Bayern Munich would be partnering with Douyin, the company behind the immensely popular social media site, TikTok.

According to Bayern’s official statement, the partnership is aimed at improving the Bayern brand in China ahead of the Bundesliga restart on May 16th.

Bayern’s Asia president FC Bayern, Rouven Kasper, said in the statement: “FC Bayern is seen in China as the most innovative football club in terms of communication. With our partnership with Douyin, we’re taking the next important step.”

While this new announcement will see Bayern’s influence grow on the Chinese app Douyin, the club already has a huge following on the global version of the app, TikTok.

After joining TikTok in April 2019, the club already boasts an impressive 1.6 million followers while stars such as Robert Lewandowski and Alphonso Davies also have accounts with millions of followers between them.

Fans react: They’re not too happy

The reaction from Bayern Munich fans on social media, particularly Twitter, has not exactly been a positive one.

One fan on Twitter wrote: “Plz don’t have that tiktok logo in our jerseys…”

While another simply added: “Sellouts”
