Is Vampire Diaries still getting taken off Netflix?

Bad news for Netflix subscribers who keep The Vampire Diaries playing on a loop.

The long-running supernatural drama, which originally aired on The CW from 2009 to 2017, is no longer on the service. As of Sunday, Sept. 4, 2022, all eight seasons (and 171 episodes) are available on HBO Max and Peacock (sign up here).

The Vampire Diaries first was added to Netflix in 2011, as part of an output deal between Netflix and The CW that saw full seasons of CW series made available on Netflix eight days after their season finales. But in 2019, The CW’s parent companies, then WarnerMedia and ViacomCBS, opted not to renew the deal and instead save their original series to bulk up their respective streaming services, HBO Max and Paramount+.

Is Vampire Diaries still getting taken off Netflix?
Per What’s on Netflix, the terms of the output deal required that each CW show licensed to Netflix remain exclusive to Netflix for five years after their final seasons were added to the service — and The Vampire Diaries‘ move to HBO Max (and Peacock) comes a little more than five years after its 2017 series finale.

As of press time, TVD spinoffs The Originals (which ran for five seasons and ended in 2018) and Legacies (which ran for four seasons and ended in 2022) are still available on Netflix. They’ll presumably make the move to HBO Max in 2023 and 2027, respectively.

Developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, and adapted from the L J. Smith book series of the same name, The Vampire Diaries‘ cast consisted of Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Steven R. McQueen, Sara Canning, Kat Graham, Candice King, Zach Roerig, Kayla Ewell, Michael Trevino, Matt Davis, Joseph Morgan and Michael Malarkey.

What are you doing, Netflix?! First, you took 30 Rock from us (thankfully the series is streaming on Hulu and Peacock) and now The Vampire Diaries is leaving Netflix?! To put this news in vampire nomenclature: it sucks.

A few days ago the dreaded “last day to watch” notification was added to the show’s Netflix page in the United States. The Vampire Diaries originally aired on The CW, producing eight seasons from 2009-2017. Led by Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder, the series found a whole new audience on Netflix, but all good things must come to an end.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Vampire Diaries leaving Netflix.

*** (UPDATE: 9/6/22): Yes! The Vampire Diaries is now streaming on Peacock! ***

WHERE TO WATCH THE VAMPIRE DIARIES AFTER IT LEAVES NETFLIX:

*** UPDATE (9/4/22): The Vampire Diaries is now streaming on HBO Max! ***

As of now, your only option will be to rent or purchase the series on Amazon, Vudu, or similar streaming outlets. There’s a very good chance, however, that The Vampire Diaries will end up on HBO Max in the near future. The CW/HBO Max streaming deal has led to a number of newer CW shows (Batwoman, Nancy Drew, Walker, Superman & Lois) debuting on the streaming platform.

Decider reached out to HBO Max for comment and will update this article with any new information.
