Is Yakuza: Like a Dragon a spin off

Update: Ishin will arrive in the west on February 21.

Update: Sega has announced that Like a Dragon: Ishin will arrive in the West on February 21, 2023.

The remake of the game will include famous Japanese actors, who have appeared in previous Yakuza games, and are being newly added to Ishin. The game will include returning songs from the series, too.

Yakuza's 2014 spinoff game Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin is getting released for the first time outside of Japan with a full remake in Like a Dragon: Ishin, Sony revealed at the September 13 State of Play. This remake will be the first RGG Studio game to be built on Unreal Engine 4.

Ishin brings familiar and new characters to 1860s Kyo, a fictional version of Kyoto that explores the end of the samurai era. Yakuza protagonist Kazuma Kiryu takes on the role of Sakamoto Ryoma, a man proficient with swords, guns, and summoning a tiger to attack enemies (though the real historical figure Kiryu plays in this game may not have been well-versed in that last part). As with other games in the franchise, Like a Dragon: Ishin will also feature minigames and Heat Actions for combat.

Like a Dragon: Ishin is coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, and PC globally in February 2023. RGG Studios has its own event, RGG Summit 2022, scheduled for September 14 at 3PM PT / 19:00 JST, putting it just before the 2022 Tokyo Game Show.

Stay tuned for IGN's Tokyo Game Show coverage, but in the meantime, you can check out the other State of Play coverage including new information about God of War Ragnarok and the official Tekken 8 announcement.

Is Yakuza: Like a Dragon a spin off

Sega has announced a western release for historical Yakuza spin-off Like a Dragon: Ishin, which has been "rebuilt from the ground up" and will be making its way to PS4 and PS5 next February.

Like a Dragon: Ishin originally released for PlayStation 3 and PS4 in Japan (under the name Ryū ga Gotoku Ishin!) back in 2014, transplanting the chaotic Yakuza formula to the Late Edo Period for a historical slice of samurai action.

It follows protagonist Sakamoto Ryōma as he returns to his home in Tosa where, after a run-in with a high-ranking samurai, he's sentenced to be executed.

Needless to say, that particular crisis is averted, and Ryōma finds himself on a quest through 1860s Kyo that serves up another distinctive slice of story, action, and mini-games that should be familiar to Yakuza fans, even if the setting isn't.

Sega hasn't offered much in the way of details regarding the changes coming to Like a Dragon: Ishin as part of its "ground up" rebuilding, but presumably it'll have more to share in the run up to its PS4 and PS5 release in February next year.

Following the PlayStation State of Play, it was also confirmed the game will be coming to Xbox consoles and PC too.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is a new spin-off coming from Yakuza developer Ryu Ga Gotoku studio and publisher Sega. Described as a "classic high-octane" action-adventure, the game will fill in the gaps between Yakuza 6 and the upcoming Yakuza 8, revealing what Kazuma Kiryu was up to during that mysterious time.

In the trailer, the legendary Dragon of Dojima is seen meditating at a temple and seeks forgiveness in a world that believes him to be dead. Even though he claims to have left his old life in the Japanese underworld behind, Kiryu is drawn back for one final job and assumes the alias of Joryu.

RGG added that this Gaiden--which means side story--adventure will be around half the length of a typical Yakuza game, and the events in it will be canon to Kiryu's timeline. Other details are being kept under wraps, but you can expect side quests, opportunities to explore, and gameplay that is aimed at Yakuza veterans and anyone who has played the entire saga so far.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will launch in 2023 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4. Beyond that, Yakuza fans will have plenty to look forward to, including the previously mentioned Like a Dragon 8 and an upcoming remake of Like a Dragon: Ishin that was announced during this week's PlayStation State of Play event.
