Jordan True Flight Black Royal Blue

The Air Jordan True Flight silhouette got a Black Royal Blue makeover in 2018. Black nubuck overlays weave their way across this design, coating portions of the side panels, heel, and ankles. Black continues on the midsole and its mountain-like arch accents. Deep Royal Blue then appears on the underlays of this sneaker, coating the toe, the sides, the padded, breathable middle portion of the ankle, and the heel. Electric Green accents further personalize this release, coating the eyelets, the heel tab, the lateral ankle's Jordan Jumpman branding, and the outer sole. Its outer sole features a unique Swiss cheese-like design on its neon tread. This blue, black, and Electric Green sneaker made its debut to the general public on December 31, 2018.

Jordan True Flight ― an AJ 7 Upgrade

Jordan true flight black and blue

If the Jordan True Flight sneakers appear recognizable, it's because they have an undeniable similarity to the Air Jordan 7 in style, with a noticeable upgrade in technology and design. Initially designed by Justin Taylor, this retro high-top basketball shoe combines the attractive throwback style of the AJ 7 with excellent comfort, support and traction on the court. Nods to the 7's distinctive look include the collar construction, the Jumpman logo placement on the insoles, tongue, heel and outsole, and the peak accent design feature present in the midsole.

The Jordan True Flight men's basketball shoe hit the market in January 2009, with a price tag of $140. Women's and kid's versions followed later. The initial lineup included four colorways — White/Varsity Red/Black (342964-161), Black/Varsity Red/Light Graphite/White (342964-061), White/Metallic Silver/Black/Varsity Purple (342964-101) and White/Court Blue/University Blue (342964-141). These colorways were all reminiscent of the stylings of the iconic AJ 7. Additional updated colorways came later, including major upgrades in 2014 and again in 2017 when they added kid's sizes to the mix. The kid's models feature colorways targeting girls, including Bordeaux/Sail (342964-625), Red Bronze (342775-112) and Black/Dark Grey/Deadly Pink (342774-009).

Other notable colorways in the True Flight collection are:

  • Black/Dark Grey (342964-013) ― monochromatic design of an all-black upper with grey accents on the midsole, Jumpman and Nike logos
  • White/Orange/Grey (342964-118) ― white upper of leather and nubuck with orange Jumpman and tongue accents, and orange peak accents on the midsole
  • Black/Metallic Gold (342964-070) ― all-black upper with an eye-catching white midsole and gold Jumpman logos on the tongue, sole and heel
  • White/Volt Ice (342964-113) ― all-white upper with volt ice accents on the midsole, Jumpman and Nike logos

Technology and Performance of the True Flight

The True Flight's outsole is an improved and updated version of the AJ 7. The tread is primarily herringbone in multi-directional sections, which give both lateral and front-to-back support. The traction is a noticeable upgrade from the 7s, providing excellent grip indoors or outside on either dusty or clean courts.

The combination of the Polyurethane footbed and Air Sole unit provide top-quality shock absorption and bounce. The shoe is lightweight and comfortable and has excellent responsive cushioning in the forefoot and heel.

True Flight Comfort and Support

The materials used in the True Flight will vary depending on the colorway. The all-nubuck upper design provides a soft, fully broken-in feel right out of the box. This is a good design choice if you're going from the box straight to the court. A colorway model with a nubuck underlay and leather top overlay offers more support and a distinctive look.

The cushion on the True Flight is a full-length Air Sole unit encased in a phylon midsole to make it dense, durable and stable. This provides maximum impact protection and support, but it comes with the trade-off of slightly decreased flexibility. This stiffness is negligible and shouldn't impact performance during quick cuts and pivots. The dynamic fit neoprene inner sleeve provides additional comfort with a sock-like feel, and the nylon web loop on the heel makes pulling on the shoe smooth and effortless.

The design includes a thick, densely lined mesh tongue, so airflow inside the shoe through the tongue is minimal, but the cutouts on the side help the shoe breathe. If you have a narrow foot, you may experience some sliding around within the shoe, which could cause more heat generation and blistering than a model with tighter forefoot containment.

An outrigger on the outside of the sole provides excellent support during lateral movements like cutting, and the sole has an internal TPU shank for excellent torsional support.

Cleaning and Care of Your True Flights

The all-nubuck colorways are naturally going to show more wear and scuffing than the nubuck/leather designs. For everyday dirt and grime, using a soft, dry brush is usually sufficient for cleanup. For more stubborn stains, make a cleaning solution with a mild laundry or dish detergent diluted with water and clean your uppers using a soft cloth or paper towels. Remove the laces and use the same cleaning solution to clean them by hand. Applying the solution to a soft brush is also a great way to clean stubborn stains on the outsole and midsoles.

Dry your shoes as thoroughly as possible with a microfiber or soft cloth towel and allow them to air dry completely before wearing. For deeper scuffs, try using a Magic Eraser. A stiffer brush like a toothbrush is ideal for cleaning the herringbone pattern of the sole. Never put your True Flights in the washing machine or use harsh chemicals like bleach or heavy-duty cleaning products on them.
