In the movies she’s a socially inept derp with decently powerful empathy powers.

In this game she’s still a powerful empath but also an excellent martial artist (took down an enraged Drax!), has awesome looking praying mantis blades, and has cosmic awareness of alternate timelines without being too OP - she’s almost handicapped by it. Her conversations, while bordering on nonsensical, are very engaging.

I wish the movie version was like this one.

Fun fact, Mantis is probably the only comic book character who canonically appears in the comic books of three seperate publishers, Marvel, DC and Eclipse Comics. She's called Willow in her appearance in DC comics, and Lorelei in Eclipse comics. Each time, she's written by her creator Steve Englehart.

That's the original half German half Vietnamese Mantis who was raised by the Kree sect Priests of Pama (you can see them in the game) to be impregnated by the alien plant species Cotati, bearing the Celestial Messiah - thus her byname Celestial Madonna. The pregnancy gave her the green hue and new powers, before that she was mainly just capable of very deadly martial arts.

The game version merges movie Mantis, who's alien in origin and insectoid, with her comic version as Celestial Madonna.

Coming as a casual Guardians fan who’s only knowledge comes from the movies, this was a refreshing take on the character. The whole being conscious of other timelines thing added to the strangeness of her character. And she’s actually very combat-capable.

I loved how she was portrayed here compared to the movies. A lot funnier, more powerful, and more socially aware while still being odd and slightly off putting.

I also love her nicknames for everyone. Especially when she keeps messing up Peter’s name until she ends up calling him “Stir-Fry” lmao

She absolutely has to join the Guardians in the sequel as an official member of the team. And let us control her like the other Guardians during battle. I’m not sure how they could incorporate 5 x 4 moves + the 4 moves from Starlord, but I need it.

I was kind of disappointed that the Guardians discussed Lady Hellbender joining the team, but never considered Mantis, who’s the obvious choice.

They do soooo much with her considering the brief time she's with you in game. Kuddos to the writing, character and mocap teams.

I am always a fan of the Crazy Oracle/Wise-One that always gives you the correct answer before you are ready to hear it or even know WTF they are talking about... But her valley girl snoot at times did put me off...

This archetype is always my favorite character in any story - Yoda, Iroh, Gandalf, Obiwan*(in a new hope)*
