Colorists have been mixing dyes since hairdressing school because we can achieve unique and custom colors.

Now, what is new in the HiColor line?

You can mix hair dyes to  obtain custom fantasy colors for dark hair without bleaching.

In the past, if your hair was dark, and you wanted to color it magenta, you had to bleach it.

Nowadays, it’s no longer necessary with HiColor. You can change your hair color without bleaching.

Also, depending on the amount you mix of each of these dyes, the possibilities are almost endless.

You can obtain up to four different colors from two colors according to how you combine them.

Now, the proportions should not be approximate.

You already know that you can get a wide range of intense burgundy, violet, and pink colors from mixing HiColor Red and Magenta. Now, how do you achieve each of these unique and personal colors?

Let me tell you a little story.

When I was a hairdressing student some time ago, one of my favorite teachers said: “today you’ll be painters and not colorists.” Can you imagine my surprise?

Actually, I didn’t have much time to react. Right away, she handed us some acrylic paints to mix and understand how the colors behaved. It was an artistic, playful, and fun experience.

However, it was only a didactic proposal to understand how primary and secondary colors work when you mix them.

 If you’re looking for a unique color by mixing HiColor Red and HiColor Magenta, you have to be accurate to get the color you want. .

If you want to achieve intense magenta/violet colors, you should mix more magenta and less red. The proportions are:

• 85% magenta and 15% red to achieve an intense purple magenta.
• 70% magenta and 30% red to achieve a dark magenta.

If you want to achieve intermediate colors such as cherry/wine, you should mix almost equal parts of magenta and red:

• 55% red and 45% magenta to obtain an intense wine color.
• 55% magenta and 45% red to obtain a cherry color.

If you want to achieve reddish colors like burgundy/dark red, you should mix more red than magenta. The proportions are:

• 85% red and 15% magenta for a deep burgundy color.
• 70% red and 30% magenta for a dark red color.

Color preparation step by step

Let’s start with the ingredients:

• L’Oreal HiColor Red
• L’Oreal HiColor Magenta
• 20-volume developer
• Gloves
• Hair dye brush
• Plastic container
• Towels and unused clothes
• Comb
• Hair clips

 Please don’t use developer of more than 20 volumes! If you do, you’ll ruin the whole process.  Your roots will be orange, and the rest of your hair will be a faded red color.

Remember, these hair dyes are for dark hair. You don’t need to lighten your hair, which is what a 30-volume developer will do.

Step by step

1- Preparation of the mixture

In the plastic container, mix the desired amount of L’Oreal HiColor Red and Magenta.  Check again the proportions suggested above. 

Also, be careful with the hair dye and developer ratio, which should be equal.

For example, if you want to achieve a cherry tone, you should mix equal parts of both colors. It would be half red and half magenta for each bottle of developer.

 In other words, you must always respect the proportion of hair dye and developer: one measure of hair dye (combining the two hair dye colors) to one of the developer. 

You shouldn’t mix one measure of each hair dye with one developer because you’d be doubling the amount of hair dye. Instead, you should combine both hair dye colors in one measure.

Otherwise, you’ll get a saturated color because the developer won’t be enough to stabilize the mixture.

2- Applying the mixture to the hair

Once you get the mixture for your new color, just apply it to your hair as you would do with any permanent hair color. Any extra tips?

• Don’t wash your hair 48 hours before applying it. This way, the scalp’s natural oils will protect your hair from the peroxide action during the coloring process.
• Cover the entire surface of the hair to achieve an even color.
• Record the amounts of HiColor Red and HiColor Magenta to get the same color when it’s time to refresh it.

What to do if you are not sure of the color you want to achieve?

Aren’t you quite sure what color you want to achieve?

If you aren’t sure about the color you want to achieve, you should do a color test.  How do you do a color test?

Apply one or more colors to only one strand of your hair.

• Let’s say you doubt between three shades of purple/violet/magenta.

Prepare the mixtures for those three colors. Remember to write down the exact amounts of each combination to be able to repeat it later.

• Once you have the three colors, separate a strand of your hair and divide it into three parts.[/su_list].

Apply each mixture on each of those three parts and wait for the time indicated by the manufacturer.
