Music Classes Canberra is an independent music school specialising in adult music education - offering classes in piano, music reading and theory, composition and arranging, and world music - run by award-winning composer and pianist, Rasa Daukus. An experienced and dedicated music educator, Rasa is passionate about teaching music creatively. She has taught tertiary level music as well as absolute beginners, written numerous collections of educational piano works for students, created music content for online, virtual and physical learning platforms, served as university lecturer, subject convener and curriculum adviser, presenter, adjudicator, and on the board of the Music Teachers' Association.

Before taking up an artist residency at Ainslie Arts Centre, Rasa was the Director of Music at the University of Canberra for four years, where she developed a highly successful practical group-focussed music tuition program for continuing adult education. These classes are modelled on that program.

Rasa is grateful to David Tattersall, the Director of Music at the University of Canberra before her, for initiating community music at UC and getting her started exploring the class format.

What Some Of Our Families & Students Think…

Both myself and my children have had singing, guitar and piano lessons with Brisbane Music Studio for several years, and I can’t recommend them highly enough. The studio is professional and modern, there is a nurturing, supportive atmosphere for all students, and the teachers are delightful. Having the opportunity to perform publicly twice a year is a huge benefit to the confidence of all students, young and old(er)!

As a parent, being in an environment, it is vital that teachers not only teach the technical aspects of music, but importantly are warm, inclusive and build confidence in the process. I have been absolutely delighted with BMS, Leah and the other teachers we have had. Both my kids were reluctant at first, but are now loving it! They now confidently sing in performance groups at school and enthusiastically take other performance opportunities. I’m so impressed, that even I’ve joined BMS as a singing student (never too late to learn) and in the choir. BMS is what all performing arts schools should aspire to be.

Stop looking…BMS is the best musical tribe to belong to in Brisbane!!! It’s not just about being technically good, any music teacher can do that. It’s what they bring to your child to make them shine inside and out that makes BMS special. Our teenage daughter has been part of the BMS family for over 3 years now. The teachers are incredibly engaging with her, always striving to improve her skills just that little bit each time. My daughter feels she is in a safe and truly encouraging environment, this is what she lives for, this is where she belongs.

What is the average cost of a music lesson?

A recent college graduate teaching from home might charge anywhere from $25 – $35 for a half-hour lesson. At a community music school, with an experienced teacher, you could pay anywhere from $40 – $55 for a half-hour lesson.

Are private music lessons worth it?

Not only do music lessons help with academic subjects, but music also helps to instill discipline. When your child takes private music lessons, they learn how to budget their time to get enough practice in and learn the importance of working hard to become better.

How long should beginner music lessons be?

Beginner music lesson length for children Since children have shorter attention, beginners do best by starting with a 30 minute lesson. Some children have better concentration and show more interest, and for these kids, 45 minutes may also work.

Are music lessons good for you?

#1: Music lessons help brain development and health. We've known for a long time that music lessons help developing brains. Musical activity involves the whole brain – every neural region that science knows about has something to do with learning and processing music. This is true for people of all ages.
