My dog likes daycare more than me

Hi All,

Has anyone experienced this before? I live alone and I've had my dog for 2 years now. We've been best buds during that time and even though he's spent extended time with my parents I've always been his favorite. He always sleeps next to me, always waits for me on walks if we're walking with other people, most excited to see me, etc. We've definitely bonded and are pretty close. For the first 2 years I had him he went to an in home doggy daycare I found on rover because I worked weird hours and he has separation anxiety. He did great there and loved it but whenever I picked him up he was always ecstatic to see me and came with me right away. I recently moved to a new state and found a new reliable in home daycare that he's gone to for the last 2 weeks after I spent the first 2 weeks just with him the whole time (2 week shutdown noted here sometimes). Anyways...since he started going to this new place he has become more and more reluctant to leave when I pick him up :( He gets excited to see me but today he would.not.budge. from their house. I had to pull him on his harness and then when we got to the car he wouldn't get in. I had to somehow pick up a 75lb husky lab mix and get him into the car. It took me 10-15 min to figure it out even :( I feel like he must think my house is boring because it's just him and I whereas at daycare it's a family (mom, dad, 2 kids, 1 big lab) there with him the whole time and he runs around and plays a ton. At home I have been doing agility training with him (we took a 12 week course over the summer before moving) and I feed him obviously and we go on long walks and hikes and occasional runs (though he HATES running, seems to get super bored with it even though he has plenty of energy). Anyways, I feel really bummed and upset tonight. Maybe I'm projecting too much and taking it way too personally but it kind of hurt my feelings!! Maybe it's just because it's exciting and new to him and I'm boring and old, I don't know. Has anyone ever dealt with this?? It didn't happen with his last daycare even though he loved it there too, I don't know what's going on! I take great care of him and feel very bonded - I don't want to give my dog up (not that this family would ever take him since they already have a dog) but I literally felt guilty taking my own dog home!

Why do dogs like doggy daycare?

Many dogs love going to daycare — especially social breeds like Labs and Golden Retrievers. After all, they get to meet new friends, run until their legs give out, and be doted on by staff. Daycare can be especially beneficial for young puppies who need regular socialization to thrive.

Is it normal for my dog to sleep a lot after daycare?

Dogs in daycare don't often take breaks from running and playing. While we do offer hour long nap rotations in the middle of the day; the dogs will still need some extra sleep at home. After a day of daycare your dog will most likely go home tired, thirsty and possibly hungry. This is completely normal behavior.
