Nico suppressed a flinch. Ironically enough, his heart started beating faster. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"I guess you haven't looked in a mirror recently."

His eyes narrowed at the blond, maybe after sneaking a glance at his ridiculously thin body in an even more ridiculous school uniform that hung off his bones.

"Well, that's none of your business and—" Nico panicked for a moment as he searched his wrist, then tried following the teacher's instructions, until he felt the gentle thrum of life underneath his finger. "There! I d—have one."

"Really?" Will grabbed his hand (okay, so it was less grabbing and more of a gentle grazing of his fingers against Nico's wrist) and oh.

His eyes blew wide, and his heart pounded in his ears. Why did I let him do that? What do I do with my hand now? Can he feel how fast my heart is going?

Future doctor Will Solace hummed, and gave his expert opinion, "checks out, I guess."

When Nico arrives at the camp near Thalia's tree, he is surprised to see Will on stalling the Romans. Will tells Nico he is doing this to get fresh air after helping Mellie give birth to her baby. Holding Nico's hand, Will shows how nervous he is from helping her give birth. This action "sent an electric current" down Nico's spine, so he withdraws his hand in shock. Will immediately notices Nico's condition and nags Nico on not using shadow traveling anymore, since it is damaging his health. The two continue to bicker throughout their mission: making sure the Roman onagers would not fire on Camp Half-Blood.

When Nico states that he is leaving both Camp Jupiter and Camp Half-Blood, Will becomes upset and demands a reason, berating him for thinking he doesn't belong. Will reassures Nico that he has a lot of friends at camp, and there are many who want to be his friend.

Later on, Will asks for Nico's company in the infirmary. When Nico confesses his feelings to Percy (these feelings would later fade due to Nico losing interest and Percy's relationship with Annabeth), he walks away toward Will. This can be seen as symbolic of Nico ultimately choosing Will over Percy in the end. After meeting Will outside the camp, Nico remembers when Will first arrived with Apollo at the camp years before. At that time, Thalia had referred to him as hot. Nico doesn't understand why he is suddenly thinking of that moment, but it is likely an indication of his attraction to Will. Nico thinks of the moment when he first met Apollo, Will's father, and how Thalia had called him "hot," too. He ponders the similarities between Apollo and his children.

The Hidden Oracle

At some point during the ensuing months, Nico finally comes out and confesses to Will Solace about having a strong crush on the latter, and the two begin dating. In order to sit together with his new boyfriend during meals, Nico claims to Chiron that he somewhat loses control of his infernal powers while sitting alone. Therefore, Nico is given permission to sit at the Apollo's Cabin's table instead, as Will produces a handy fake doctor's note, and Chiron decides it isn't worth arguing about.

Nico and Will flirt a lot in this book, and Apollo says that they remind him of him and Hyacinthus. Nico and Will are mostly inseparable, partnering up with each other in the labyrinth and Nico assists Will with healing. When Nero attacks with the Colossus Neronis, Will and Nico were canoeing In the lake together as a date. Nico does express some jealousy in the relationship. When Will is staring at Paolo’s arms, Nico thinks he is attracted to him.

According to a December ReadRiordan post, Nico has also spent a lot of time text messaging Will while visiting his father in the Underworld. It is unknown whether these events took place before or after The Hidden Oracle, though it is likely that it happened after.

The Tower of Nero

Apollo sees Nico sit with Mr. D, which is strange seeing how him and Nico always sat together. Sunshine boy, Will, explains why. Solace then confirms that Mr. D was giving Nico advice since the Italian boy was receiving flashbacks. Not to mention that Nico started to hear someone calling for help in Tartarus. Will, who somehow knows all this due to his boyfriend rights, expresses his concern towards his Nico saying that he was trying to keep him from charging into the underworld to help the voice he was hearing.

Later, Will gives an apple to Nico, saying he needed to eat, a skill that took away hunger. Nico did poorly at this particular skill. The son of Hades then leans into Will expressing his affection towards him. Mr. D then reveals bad news about Nero. Nico, tired of knowing problems he can't fix, subconsciously causes his apple to wither. Will squeezes his hand. The ghost king's eyes soften at his boyfriend, which reveals that he had a soft spot towards Will and apologizes.

Solangelo, Apollo, and Meg then discuss the quest. When Apollo starts talking about the quest, Meg starts talking about the fact Nico was in it. Nico shows shock to this, and Will stares at his muffin wrapper. Nico then asks about this. Will looks to Apollo for help, but Apollo said the lines about Nico in the prophecy anyways. Nico shows anger that no one told him he was in a prophecy causing Apollo to casually switch the subject asking if Nico knew who the cavern runners are in the prophecy. Nico reveals he knows the information. After a few sentences and explanations later, it becomes clear that Will doesn't like these 'cavern runners'. Nico stands with his belief that the 'cavern runners' are their only chance.

Solangelo, Meg and Apollo then goes to Rachel Elizabeth Dare asking about the Tower of Nero to see if the oracle had any wisdom to share. In the middle of Rachel sharing some limited information, Will makes a star wars reference. Nico then apologizes for his boyfriend in a teasingly manner. Will teases back about his Myth-o-Magic obsession. Rachel then finishes sharing her information. Meg and Apollo start sharing their story. The 5 start making a plan and Solangelo reveals that the 'cavern runners' are troglodytes. Rachel suddenly gets possessed by Python and says the rest of the prophecy. tauri sylvestres or forest bulls then attack. After getting away from them, they meet the 'cavern runners'. They chatted and after a while the troglodytes agreed to help them.

Nico is now on the floor, over-powered by Nero, severely injured. They had lost. Apollo and Nico were going to die. Then Will shows up, and with the words that echoed through a lot of people's hearts. He said that no one hurts his boyfriend.

Later, Nico plans to travel into Tartarus - literal Hell - to rescue Bob the Titan and Will makes it clear that he intends to join his boyfriend despite the immense dangers. The two then receive a prophecy for their quest from Rachel that Will admits doesn't sound good. Which left fans on a cliffhanger.

Solangelo was largely popular after the events of The Blood of Olympus. Will and Nico's interaction remained minimal throughout the events of the series before the final book. After the slight implications of Nico possibly liking Will and Riordan confirming that Nico is queer, Solangelo has been getting more attention. Although, some fans still cling to Percico over Solangelo. Many Solangelo fanfictions includes fics about what happened in the three days of rest of the infirmary.

After Rick's confirmation about Solangelo on his Twitter, fans were excited and overjoyed and Solangelo has been confirmed as canon and has been getting more and more attention since the release of The Hidden Oracle.
