Oculus Quest 2 cast to TV without Chromecast

For the person wearing the headset, the Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 provides a fully immersive experience.

But what about everyone else in the room? They’re all watching you thrash around, without being able to see what you’re thrashing at.

Luckily there is a solution. You can cast your virtual experience to a television and let them in on the action!

In order to cast Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your TV, first make sure your Chromecast and Quest 2 on are the same WiFi network. Then change your TV’s input/source to Chromecast (HDMI). Finally, turn your Quest headset on and go to Sharing > Cast and select your TV.

This casting approach works whether you have a Samsung TV, Roku TV, LG TV, etc.

NOTE: Not all TVs come with Chromecast built in, so you’ll probably need to get a separate Chromecast device in order to make this work. That said, even if you don’t have Chromecast, there is a work around – simply cast to a phone or laptop first, and then mirror it to your television. More details below.

1. Confirm Chromecast and Quest 2 are on the same WiFi network

You can only cast from your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your TV  if both Chromecast and Quest 2 devices are connected to the same WiFi network.

Most routers now have what’s referred to as “dual-band” radio signals. It gives you the ability to connect devices in your home to two different networks – either the 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz network.

Two different networks means faster speeds and more flexibility. Dual-bands help your network avoid connection and interference issues and it provides more stability overall.

But, this can cause issues when attempting to cast your Oculus (Meta) 2 to your TV.

As an example – if your Chromecast is connected to the 2.4 GHz network, but your Quest 2 is connected to the 5.0 GHz network, casting simply will not work!

It just takes a few seconds, so double-check that your Chromecast and your Quest 2 are on the same exact same WiFi network band!

Check your Chromecast WiFi network

Here is how to check which WiFi network your Chromecast is on:

1. Start by opening up the Google Home app on your smartphone
   1. NOTE: make sure your smartphone is also connected to the WiFi network you want to connect your Chromecast to!
2. Select your device from within the app
3. Tap on Settings (the gear icon) at the upper right-hand corner
4. Finally, select Wi-Fi

Now you should see the “Network name” your Chromecast is connected to. If it’s not connected to the correct network, you’ll want to click “Forget” and then setup your Chromecast connection again.

Ok, now we just need to confirm your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 is connected to this same WiFi network.

Checking your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 WiFi network

Here is how to check which WiFi network your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 is on:

1. Select Apps from the home screen
2. Go to Settings and then Device
3. Finally select Wi-Fi

You should be able to see the “Network name” your Oculus Quest 2 is connected to.

2. Change TV Input to Chromecast (HDMI)

We’ve confirmed your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 and your and Chromecast are on the same WiFi network, now we want to select the TV input that your Chromecast is connected to.

Depending on the TV model you have this process will vary a bit, but usually changing the input of your TV is quite simple:

1. Start by pressing the Input/Source button on your TV’s remote
2. Toggle until you see “Chromecast”
3. HINT: Chromecast connects via HDMI, so it will be connected to one of your TV’s HDMI inputs

If you don’t have a remote or can’t find it, use the input/source button the TV itself.

3. Cast Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to TV

Ok, so now your Chromecast and Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 are on the same WiFi network and your TV is on the correct input/source and it’s showing the Chromecast home screen.

It’s time to cast!

1) Turn on your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 by pressing the power button on the right side of the headset.

2) While on the home screen, select Sharing followed by Cast.

3) A window will pop up with all available devices you can cast to. Pick your TV. Your Oculus Quest 2 should connect automatically.

You should see your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 mirrored on your TV!

How to cast Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to phone then mirror to TV

You don’t need a Chromecast device in order to cast your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your TV.

Instead, you can cast your Quest 2 to your phone and then mirror your phone to your television.

1. Casting Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your phone

Here is how to cast your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your phone:

1. First, download and open the Meta Quest app
   1. Apple App Store
   2. Google Play Store
2. Then power on your Oculus Meta Quest 2
3. Press the Oculus button on the right touch controller to pop up the Menu
4. Go to Sharing and then Cast
5. Now choose the option for the Oculus app
6. A brief prompt will appear within the app. Select “Start Casting“.

2. Mirror your phone to your TV

Now that we have your Quest 2 casting to your phone, we just need to mirror your phone to your TV!

NOTE: Make sure your phone is on the same WiFi network as your TV and your Quest 2!

Mirroring using an Apple device

First, we want to make sure Airplay is enabled on your TV. If it isn’t, you will not be able to cast.

The process to turn Airplay on will differ depending which TV you own:

• How to enable Roku TV Airplay
• How to enable Vizio TV Airplay
• How to enable Samsung TV Airplay
• How to enable LG TV Airplay

Now that you’ve made sure Airplay is ON, it’s time to mirror your Apple device to your television.

Just swipe down on the screen of your Apple device from the top right hand corner. This opens up the Control Center.

Here you’ll find a small picture-in-picture icon (located right next to the lock button). Click on it.

This will open a Screen Mirroring menu on your iPhone with a list of all nearby devices. You should see your TV on the list. Click on it!

Enter your PIN, if one is required. And that’s it. Your iPhone or iPad is now casting to your TV.

Mirroring using a non-Apple device

You can also cast to your TV using a non-Apple device! Many TVs allow you to cast to them using the screen mirroring feature on your device.

The screen mirror feature is named differently for each phone/tablet brand. So be on the look for one of the following on your device:

• Smart mirror
• Mirroring
• Miracast
• Mirror share
• Screencast
• Screen share
• Multi screen
• Wireless display

Find this feature setting on your device and enable it. Your device should begin scanning for available devices that it can cast to. You should see your TV included in this list. Select it to start casting.

If you don’t see your TV listed, double check that both your TV and your casting device are using the same WiFi network!

Finally, a permission window should automatically appear on your TV. When it does, select ALLOW.

That’s it. Your device should be successfully casting to your TV!

How to cast Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your laptop then mirror to TV

If you’re having trouble casting your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your TV and/or your phone, you can cast to your laptop instead.

First you’ll cast your Quest 2 to your laptop, then you’ll mirror your laptop to your TV.

NOTE: Make sure your laptop is on the same WiFi network as your TV and your Quest 2!

1. Casting Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your laptop

To cast your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your laptop:

1. On your laptop, open up oculus.com/casting
2. Then login with the same credentials as your Meta Quest 2
3. Power on your Oculus Meta Quest 2 headset
4. Press the Oculus button on the right touch controller to bring up the Menu
5. Go to Sharing and then Cast
6. This time select the Computer option

2. Mirror your laptop to your TV

If you’re trying to cast to TV using a Mac, just look for the Control Panel icon in the top navigation bar of your laptop and click on it. 

Then select Screen Mirroring, followed by your TV.

Troubleshooting

If you’re having issues casting your Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 to your TV, you should try the following troubleshooting steps.

Restart devices

The easiest thing to do is to simply power off all your devices, wait a full 60 seconds, and then turn them back on.

To reset your TV, start by unplugging it from the wall for a minute.

The key is to wait a FULL 60 seconds. Have some patience and make sure it’s been at least a minute before plugging it back in.

While your TV is unplugged from the wall, find and hold the power button on your TV for 30 seconds. Make sure you are holding the power button on your TV, and not your remote!

This drains any residual power left in your TV’s capacitors and allows the TV to soft reset itself. This is different than simply switching the remote on and off!

Check Quest 2 for software updates

Next, make sure you’re running the latest software on all of your devices, especially your Quest 2!

To make sure you are using the latest software on your Quest 2, follow these steps:

1. First, power on your Oculus Meta Quest 2 headset
2. Press the Oculus button on the right touch controller to bring up the Menu
3. Go to Apps and then Settings
4. Select About and finally Software Update

Note: If you are already running the latest version, it will say “No Updates Available”.

Restart your WiFi router

Start by checking your smartphone or other devices at home that use WiFi. If they’re not connecting, then your router isn’t working as it should.

Simply unplug your router for 60 seconds, and then plug it back in. It will take a few minutes for the router to completely reset, but once it’s back online it should help your TV connect with your Quest.

If you continue having internet connection problems, you should trying calling your internet service provider for assistance.
