GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Welcome to the May 16 edition of the Gloucester Township Monday Manual, where we highlight important events coming up this week in and around Gloucester Township.

  • On Monday at 7 p.m., the Board of Education for the Gloucester Township School District holds a board meeting. The honoring of 11 teachers throughout the district, as well as second readings of the district policies on school surveys and sports-related concussions are among the items on the meeting’s agenda.
  • Then Thursday at 6 p.m, the Our Lady of Hope Parish kicks off its 3-day carnival in the parking lot of the Our Lady of Hope Church. Games, rides, all kinds of food, as well as a beer garden and raffle, are just some of the fun activities that carnival attendees can enjoy.
  • Moving on to Saturday, Gloucester Township hosts a free paper-shredding event at Camden County College’s Blackwood Campus. The event starts at 8 a.m. and lasts until 12 p.m. or the trucks disposing of the paper shreds are full. The township reminds would-be attendees that the event is only open to Gloucester Township residents.
  • Also on Saturday, but starting at 9 a.m., is the opening day of the Kiwanis Club Children’s Garden near the Lamp Post Diner. The opening day lasts until 5 p.m., but regardless of when you stop by, the garden’s creators and curators say that they hope children walk away from the event “educated and enriched.”

Our Lady of Hope Parish, Blackwood, is holding its annual carnival Aug. 26-28 on the parish grounds.

The carnival will run 6-10 p.m. Aug. 26 and 6-11 p.m. Aug. 27-28. It will be held on the grounds of Saint Agnes Church, 701 Little Gloucester Road. The church is one of two parish worship sites.

Dating back to 1986, the event is a staple in the community, said parishioner Diane Scherrer, who is also a carnival committee member. “The carnival has always been a community event for all God’s people. It brings together the parish’s 5,000 families and surrounding communities to create camaraderie, merriment and memories.”

Father Joseph Szolack, pastor, agreed. “A special blessing is our multicultural experience of working side by side with the Spanish community of St. Jude [Church].” Both Saint Jude and Saint Agnes Churches are parish worship sites.
