Like many formally trained drama professionals, I am currently teaching to supplement my performance opportunities. Some of my classes have a strong theatre history component and this book is just outstanding as source materiel. Of course, it is a very simplified version of the theatre history that I took in graduate school (History of the Theatre - Oscar Brockett) but these high schoolers don't need all of the minutiae and detail to understand where we came from and how we got here in theatre.
This book makes clear distinctions between the different eras into which many of us break down the development of Western theatre practice. I was pleased to see that the details are essentially correct, if overly simplified. Obviously, that gives me the opportunity to pull out my college and lecture materiels and supplement as I see fit. The addition of minor exercises and short questionnaires are great "busy work" options as offered by this publication.
My choices in teaching this aspect of Drama are to add to the students' knowledge sufficiently so they can understand the materiel that we are studying and performing. My other motivation is to give them a very basic foundation that, should they continue in college along this field of study, will serve them well. This book is exactly what I need: the basic facts and timelines, with plenty of room for a more detailed examination if needed. Let's face it, like many pseudo-intellectuals, I like to think I know something about Shakespeare, so that section of study REALLY gets added to when we get to it. Of course, I cheated a little. While we looked at Elizabethan theatre, we also produced 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', so the students could actually see many practical applications of how Shakespeare works as performance.

I would also suggest that if you are an English teacher who has been tasked with teaching a Drama class as an enrichment in your school system, then this book will give you a great starting point for the history aspect of your course. The usual textbook for schools (The Stage and the School) is not a bad book and it has lots of good information, as well as some very good script selections. However, it's not a bad thing to have another source of information and this one, Theatre Through the Ages, certainly is well worth the cost. I think it is an extremely well-done "Hello, welcome to Theatre!" type of publication.
