Vice city trojan voodoo gate wont open

I get the car and go with Rico and meet his m8s and go inside the building and set up all the bombs then I run back to my car, go to drive out of the place but the damn gate won't open! I've been looking around and thats the only way out of the base that I can find. Then, when the gate doesn't open and the timer runs out I get "Mission Failed" because I'm too near to the damn base! Please someone gimme some tips of how to either open the gate or a way to exit the base another way???? I would be extremely grateful
