Hi - after advice on the best & most affordable route to travel from Australia to Mexico (NOT via America) for a holiday in May.

Ideally flying from Brisbane, but Syd or Melb is fine.

End Destination is Cabo San Lucas for a wedding,flights into Mexico City are fine & can arrange transfer from there.

Flights originally purchased to fly via LAX but can no longer travel this way due to my partners visa issue.

Looks like Canada, China & Singapore are all options, would love to hear from anyone that has had similar issue & what route did you decide was the best option?

Hi Gracie,

The issue is irrelevant.

My question is directed at any travelers who have sourced an alternative route flying to Mexico from Australia (not via America).

There are various options to travel to this destination (some options shorter / longer / more expensive than others) & its rather confusing - hence if someone has done it I would love their advice.

You would probably find the help of a travel agent would make this so much simpler. I presume you would be looking at LAN tofly to somewhere in South America and then on to Mexico ... an agent will be able to show you all the possibilities and costs.

No I've never done it, but agree - the reasons are your business.

You don't say when or whether cost, travel time or comfort are you're biggest factors, i.e in Business class, but a methodical trawl through the options on a search engine should get you the answer. Thats where I'd start.

You are then looking for a common denominator that you can go to and fancy best.

My first thought was Paris, as Aero mexico do direct flights from there and it is a competitive route, but there are many such options.

You can google search for "wiki airport (name) " to get that detail for any airport in the world.

You can get to Mexico City (MEX) from BNE with two changes on LAN. It would be BNE-AKL(Auckland)-SCL(Santiago)-MEX. The first leg is a code share operated by Qantas. Bookable directly from LAN.

LAN is a OneWorld carrier so if you're a member of the Qantas frequent flier program you may earn miles and elite qualifying points (subject to buying the appropriate fare class).

And I agree it's none of our business why you can't (or even choose not to) fly via the US.

I don't care if you want to share the issue or not. However, it is relevant to offering any helpful suggestions, as the reason your partner can't enter the US, may prevent entry to other countries.

We flew to MEX via SCL last year and found it a good option, but probably one of the more expensive options. Via SIN, China etc are good but lengthy.

Agree with most, but also with Gracie . While we do not need to know why, it is important you research other transit countries for similar transit rules that ruled out the US as an option.

AeroMexico fly direct from Tokyo to Mexico City. That would be not much more of a detour than flying via Canada. You would need to play around online, or seek the advice of a good travel agent (not necessarily the pimply kids atflight centre) to decide whether it's cheaper to try to cobble together a mixed airline itinerary or simply book it as two separate trips (BNE-NRT-BNE on Qantas - or Jetstar from OOL - if yore game and then NRT-MEX-NRT on AeroMexico) but being aware of the inherent risks of travelling two unlinked itineraries if you miss a connection due to delays.

Another option is Emirates to Panama City - the only Central American destination served by any of the big three Middle Eastern airlines. From there you can no doubt find plenty of connections up to various ports in Mexico.

As for having to avoid the US, that's perfectly understandable for a whole swathe of reasons. I'm now no longer allowed to transit via US ports due to having visited one of their "blacklisted" countries in recent years.

I haven't seen the website you have listed above, will have a good search this evening - this is a great help. I had also googled directflights but was only coming across booking sites, so have been trawling through them rather tediously working out various routes, the wiki links are great.
