What androgynous haircut should I get quiz

Ahh, yes — remember the (awful) days when society dictated every choice people made about their fashion and beauty choices, citing BS rules like "short hair is for boys" and "long hair is for girls"? Well, it's time to kick those harmful and oppressive ideas to the curb, 'cause newsflash — hair doesn't have a gender. Say it with us — 🗣 any haircut can be gender-neutral, whether it's short, medium, long, curly, wavy, or straight. 🗣! The only idea we won't be shaving off today is that hair is an important part of how we express ourselves to the world and affirm our identities.

"Our world, our society has this constant need to label and gender everything so historically everything and every cut has been gendered," says Jessie Brown, a stylist at the queer-owned barber shop and salon BADDIES STUDIO BK. "I’m trying to break away from gendering haircuts in any capacity. To me, all haircuts are gender-neutral like colors, clothes, etc. It’s all the same to me," they say.

Some may choose a gender-neutral look to play with the idea of androgyny (aka a blend of traditionally feminine and masculine qualities of appearance), while others simply have a DGAF attitude and want the look they've always dreamed of.

Alexandra Hartt, a barber at Hairrari Barbershop NYC says, "In the past, some gendered haircuts have included tight fades, crops, and pompadours for men. Bobs, shags, or long round layers for women among others."

"Traditionally masculine leaning cuts have a square shape to accentuate a square jawline and femme haircuts traditionally follow a more triangular or round shape for a softer look," she adds.

As for traditionally gender-neutral haircuts, Jessie says "Typically mullets, shags, and 90s lover boy haircuts all can be both masculine and feminine depending on how you wear them," giving us a starting line of gender-neutral haircut ideas.

Whether you're taking inspiration from these styles or carving out your own path, Alexandra has some words of advice when searching for your perfect cut. "If you are looking for something that you feel will represent your identity more try understanding what features you would like to accentuate, finding pictures you feel represent your desired look, and using keywords like "masculine", "feminine", "messy", "neat", "shaggy", "punk", "1950’s", "shag", "mullet", etc."

"Giving yourself a mood board of photos, as well as words you feel, represent you, can help the stylist get on the same page," she says.

But don't forget that there are a few practical factors that you should weigh before going for the chop. "When consulting with a client, obviously [hair] texture and face shape plays a huge role in deciding the right fit. But mostly I want to know what their lifestyle is," Jessie says.

"For a cut that works best, clients should [also] take into account the time they want to put into style (wash and go or some effort), the texture of the hair, the shape of the face and cheekbones, the type of hairline and the direction the hair grows if they want fringe, bangs, or shorter pieces around their forehead, and how quickly their hair grows," says Topher Gross, a trans hairstylist with 20 years of experience making people fabulous in NYC, Amsterdam and beyond.

Once you've made up your mind after scrolling through all of our options below, you'll want to find the right stylist. "Finding a stylist you vibe with can be hard and is honestly a lot like dating. Finding pictures of what you want is the best first step, and then hey, date around. ... There are so many amazing stylists out there, you just have to find the one for you!" Alexandra says.

Another outdated practice to avoid when speed dating for a stylist is pricing based on gender. "Pricing haircuts according to gender is outdated, ridiculous, disrespectful, and should be illegal," says Topher. "Salons and stylists need to do better, educate themselves and implement new policies to make a client experience welcoming and supportive."

And there are so many hairstylists, colorists, and barbers out there ready to help you achieve your dream queer and/or gender-neutral look. "It is an absolute pleasure to be able to create looks that make my community feel good in their skin. I wouldn’t be doing anything else," says Jessie, "The future of hair is queer and gender-neutral. The future of hair is loud and with no rules."
