Labeling

Label tube(s) with the patient name plus a second identifier (birthdate, laboratory ID, medical record number) that can be found on the requisition.

Shipping

Label each specimen with patient name and second identifier, date all samples and enclose test requisition with sample(s). All information must be completed before sample can be processed. Place sample in Styrofoam mailer and ship at room temperature (unless otherwise noted below) by overnight Federal Express to arrive Monday through Friday. For Saturday delivery, contact the laboratory for instructions. In hot weather, a cool pack can be enclosed. Shipping costs are generally the responsibility of the sender.

Standard order of draw: BLOOD CULTURES, royal blue, red, light blue, SST (Gold), green, tan, yellow, pink, pearl, lavender. If a coag tube (light blue) is the only tube or the first tube to be drawn, a 5 mL discard tube must be drawn first.

For diagnostic and proactive testing, saliva is the easiest specimen for patients to provide from home and enables results just as accurate as blood.

Invitae also accepts DNA that has been isolated in other laboratories, although there are assay limitations for previously-extracted DNA specimens (for details, please see the “DNA” tab below). Please note that we cannot accept DNA specimens for STAT testing at this time.

What types of samples are used for DNA testing?

Samples collected from unidentified bodies can include: blood, buccal swabs, hairs, bone, teeth, fingernails, tissues from internal organs (including brain), muscle, and skin.

What blood tube colors are for which test?

Blood Collection Tubes.

How do you collect a blood sample for DNA testing?

Blood samples can be submitted in one of two ways: blood tubes or FTA cards. To collect a tube of blood, use a standard blood collection needle, hub and tube to collect blood from either directly underneath the tail or the neck (jugular).

What instrument is used for DNA testing?

Polymerase Chain Reaction Machines The test subject can submit a single tissue sample and receive multiple test results in return. All of this is possible thanks to the polymerase chain reaction machine, which is why this machine is a staple in DNA labs. PCR machines copy DNA segments, allowing for multiple tests.
