What does a red light mean on a Wii?

The Nintendo Wii may be 12 years old but due to its family-friendly nature and just how insanely popular it was at the time, it can still be found in many a living room. With both a light in the power button and a glowing disc light, what do those different colours means?

Power light

Green –  the Console power is powered on

Orange/yellow – the Wii is in standby. WiiConnect24* will continue to work during this time.

Red – the Wii is switched off but is still receiving power. WiiConnect24* will not be working.

No light – the Wii is switched off and is not receiving any power. WiiConnect24* will not be working.

Disc slot illumination

When this is flashing blue, the WiiConnect24* has received new data.

However, this can be changed from the Wii’s settings, so may have been overridden.

*WiiConnect24 allows your Wii console to receive a wide variety of data automatically – email message, a system update, etc.

Green means it's turned on. Yellow means that it's sleeping, but listening for incoming internet messages ("wiiconnect24", not active since 2013, and having the console in that partially-on mode generates a potentially-damaging amount of heat in older consoles). Red means that it's as close to Off as possible without unplugging it.

Modded consoles can have a resurrected wiiconnect24 service called riiconnect24, though.

just got my wii u, and when I first plugged in the power cord, the light was red. but now after I've used it and then turned it off, the light is yellow. I think it was green or blue while I was playing. anyway, why is it yellow now? is it fully shutdown or is it some kind of sleep mode? I turned it off with the controller, if that matters

It's probably in standby mode. It's nothing wrong.

so standby mode is the same as being off right? like how my ps3 shuts down but has a red light unless I unplug it?

wait...now it's red. I guess it takes down to shutdown. whatever. this console is kinda wonky but I still like it

Yellow is standby. That means it's connected to the Internet and ready to download updates while your not using it.

It's not wonky. When it's orange while in standby mode it's connecting to the internet to see if there's anything to download, and if there is it will.

Both red and yellow mean standby. Yellow just means it's still connected to the Internet and able to download or is downloading data.

  1. Lately, every 3-5 times I go to turn the system on, the power light on the Wii U console starts blinking red, and it won't turn on. Whenever this happens, I unplug the AC adapter on both ends, wait for a couple of minutes, and plug it in again, and the system works just fine. I don't think it's a heating issue, because the console never feels hot and it doesn't shut off on its own. Also, I don't think it's a motherboard issue, because the system still works and nothing happens to my save data.

I have been having this problem since the first few months of 2014, though it never happened at all between the system update in June and the most recent system update. Also, I don't know if this is related, but after the recent update, when I turn the system on, the disc drive makes a small shifting noise before it actually starts spinning.

Having to reset the AC adapter all the time is getting tedious, so any help would be appreciated.

How do you fix the red light of death on the Wii U?

TL;DR: Unplug everything, dust off completely with compressed air, let sit for a full week, turn on, disable standby mode, start using again and dusting regularly, and give it lots of breathing room.

What does red light mean on Wii U?

If your gamepad's battery light is flashing red, that means that your battery is about to die and you can't turn it off or it will completely die.

How do you turn on a dead Wii?

Power off the console and unplug the power cord for a few seconds. Plug the power cord back in and turn the Wii back on. At the "Health and Safety" screen, open the small door on the faceplate of the console. Hold the red sync button for at least 15 seconds.
