As the world’s eyes remain fixed on the escalating conflict in Ukraine, the discourse coming from Eastern Europe is causing some confusion for non-Ukrainian and non-Russian speakers.

On 24 February 2022, Russian tanks, at the behest of Vladimir Putin, crossed the Ukrainian border. In the week since, the world has been following the conflict through news outlets as well as social media channels.

As many Russians and Ukrainians around the world share their thoughts on the conflict, those who don’t speak the languages have been looking to the internet for help. As the daughter of Putin’s spokesman offers her thoughts on the conflict, we translate the meaning of ‘het bonhe‘.

Liza Peskova says ‘het bonhe’ in response to Ukrainian conflict

Elizaveta “Liza” Peskova, 24, is the daughter of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. While she may be best known as Dmitry Peskov’s daughter, Liza has also built a social media following of her own. Currently, her Instagram account is set to private but Peskova has more than 238,000 followers as of publication date.

On 25 February 2022, Peskova reportedly took to Instagram to share a Story with the simple phrase “het bonhe”. A screenshot of this Instagram Story, which has been purportedly deleted, has become a talking point online.

If you don’t speak Russian you may be curious what Liza Peskova meant by her statement on the Ukrainian conflict, especially as she quickly deleted the statement.

What is the meaning of ‘het bonhe’?

“Het bonhe”, stylised in Russian Cyrillic as HET BOЙHE, translates to “no to war”. It forms an anti-war chant that has been adopted by Russians who oppose the war and, to some, a criticism of Putin’s leadership.

Liza Peskova isn’t the first public figure in Russia to adopt the slogan. Russian tennis players Elena Vesnina and Karen Khachanov reportedly wrote “HET BONHE” on Instagram after the invasion began. Fellow tennis player Andrey Rubley also made a call for peace writing “No War Please” on a TV camera lens at the Dubai Championships.

The ‘het bonhe’ movement gathers momentum

Anti-war protests and rallies have been organised in Russia and beyond since Russian tanks crossed the Ukrainian border.

In Moscow and St Petersburg, some of the biggest crowds have gathered to protest against the invasion. At least 1,700 arrests were made by Russian police in 53 Russian cities on the day of the invasion (24 February 2022), the Guardian claims.

Al Jazeera reports claims by “independent monitor” OVD-Info that the number of anti-war protesters detained in Russia since Thursday (24 February) had jumped to 5,000. Protesters have been seen carrying signs reading “het bonhe”.
