What fractions are greater than 2 3?

If two fractions have different numerators and denominators it is difficult to determine which fraction is larger. It is easier to determine which is larger if both fractions have the same denominator.

Multiply the numerator and denominator of one fraction by the same number so both fractions will have the same denominator. For example, if 5/12 and 1/3 are being compared, 1/3 should be multiplied by 4/4. It does not change the value of 1/3 to be multiplied by 4/4 (which is equal to 1) because any number multiplied by 1 is still the same number. After the multiplication (1/3 * 4/4 = 4/12), the comparison can be made between 5/12 and 4/12.

You may have to multiply both fractions by different numbers to produce the same denominator for both fractions. For example if 2/3 and 3/4 are compared, we need to multiply 2/3 by 4/4 to give 8/12 and multiply 3/4 by 3/3 to give 9/12. The fraction 3/4 which is equal to 9/12 is larger than 2/3 which is equal to 8/12.

The fraction with the larger numerator is the larger fraction if the denominators are the same.

How to Compare Fractions

To compare fractions with unlike denominators convert them to equivalent fractions with the same denominator.

  1. If you have mixed numbers convert them to improper fractions
  2. Find the lowest common denominator (LCD) for the fractions
  3. Convert each fraction into its equivalent with the LCD in the denominator
  4. Compare fractions: If denominators are the same you can compare the numerators. The fraction with the bigger numerator is the larger fraction.

Example:

Compare 5/6 and 3/8.

Find the LCD: The multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, etc. The multiples of 8 are 8, 16, 24, 32, etc. The lowest common multiple is 24 so we use that as the lowest common denominator.

Convert each fraction to its equivalent fraction using the LCD.
For 5/6, multiply numerator and denominator by 4 to have LCD = 24 in the denominator.

\( \dfrac{5}{6} \times \dfrac{4}{4} = \dfrac{20}{24} \)

For 3/8, multiply numerator and denominator by 3 to have LCD = 24 in the denominator.

\( \dfrac{3}{8} \times \dfrac{3}{3} = \dfrac{9}{24} \)

Compare the fractions. Because there are like denominators you can compare the numerators. 20 is larger than 9, so:

Since

\( \dfrac{20}{24} > \dfrac{9}{24} \)

we conclude

\( \dfrac{5}{6} > \dfrac{3}{8} \)

When 2 fractions have the same denominator, the one the larger numerator is greater.

Example:
Compare the given fraction
5/5 and 2/3

Solution:
Here 5/5 is greater than 2/3

Example: Which is larger: 3/8 or 5/12  ?
If you multiply 8 × 3 you get 24 , and if you multiply 12 × 2 you also get 24, so let's try that (important: what you do to the bottom, you must also do to the top):

It is now easy to see that 9/24 is smaller than 10/24, (because 9 is smaller than 10).
so 5/12 is the larger fraction.

Table of some examples:

is 2/3 greater than 5/12 Yes
is 5/12 greater than 3/8 Yes
is 5/12 greater than 2/3 NO
is 3/8 bigger than 1/2 NO
is 5/8 bigger than 1/2 NO
is 5/8 bigger than 3/4 NO
is 2/3 more than 1/2 Yes
is 3/8 bigger than 1/4 Yes
is 3/8 greater than 5/12 NO

How Do You Compare Fractions?

The answer to that question depends on whether you are comparing fractions with the same denominators or if you are comparing fractions with different denominators.

Comparing Fractions with Same Denominators

Comparing fractions with the same denominators (bottom number) is easy. All you do is compare the numerators to see which fraction is greater, like this:

Comparison with Same Denominators

Comparing Fractions with Different Denominators

Comparing fractions with different denominators requires a little more work (unless you use the compare fractions calculator on this page), because in order to compare the fractions you must first turn their different denominators into the same denominators. You do that by finding the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators.

To illustrate how you use LCM to turn different denominators into same denominators, let's suppose you want to compare the fraction 2/3 to the fraction 3/4 to see which is greater.

The first step is to find the lowest number that both 3 and 4 will divide into evenly (the LCM). According to my calculations, the LCM of the two denominators (3 & 4) is 12.

Once we have found the LCM for the two denominators, the next step is to multiply the top and bottom of each fraction by the number of times each fraction's denominator goes into the LCM.

Since 3 goes into 12 a total of 4 times, you would multiply the top and bottom of 2/3 by 4, which results in 8/12.

Next, since 4 goes into 12 a total of 3 times, you would multiply the top and bottom of 3/4 by 3, which results in 9/12.

Finally, since both denominators are now the same, you compare the numerators (8 and 9) to determine which fraction is greater. Since 9 is greater than 8, 9/12 is greater than 8/12 -- therefore 3/4 is greater than 2/3. Here is how our example of comparing fractions with different denominators might appear on paper:

Comparing Fractions with Different Denominators

Step #1:   2x 4 Vs 3x 3 = 8 Vs 9
3x 4 4x 3 12 12
Step #2:   8 < 9
12 12

So for like denominators you simply compare the numerators and for unlike denominators you multiply the top and bottom by the least common multiple of each denominator, and then compare the numerators.

Which Fraction is Bigger Calculator

Is bigger than ?
Answer: Yes, 3/4 is bigger than 1/2. You can confirm this by converting both fractions to decimals.

The decimal 0.75 is bigger than 0.5, so 3/4 is bigger than 1/2.

What fraction is bigger 2/3 or 5 6?

Answer and Explanation: The fraction 5/6 is greater than 2/3.

What fraction is bigger 2/3 or 3 4?

34 is bigger.

What fraction is smaller then 2 3?

Marissa makes a fraction equivalent to 2/3 with 7 as the numerator; that is, 7 ÷ 2 = 3 1/2 and 3 1/2 x 3 = 10 1/2, so 7/10 1/2 = 2/3 and 7/12 < 7/10 1/2, so 7/12 is smaller than 2/3.

What fraction is 2/3 equivalent to?

An equivalent fraction of two-thirds (2/3) is sixteen twenty-fourths (16/24).
