The spooky home — which is introduced in sixth episode “Parcel 6” — is the abode of Mrs. Crain (Sharon E. Smith), an old woman who murdered her husband with an axe according to local legend. Mrs. Crain’s home is so scary, it would probably give the American Horror Story Murder House the chills. It’s also basically real, according to the cast.

“Mrs. Crane? She’s real. She owns that house,” Rudy Pankow, who plays Outer Banks mischief-maker JJ, told Refinery29 in February with a chuckle. Then his co-stars, Madison Bailey and Jonathan Daviss, filled in the full story. The pair explained that the real-life woman who owns the Charleston, S.C. home where Outer Banks filmed the Crain House scenes is also a widower (“She didn’t kill her husband. She’s a sweet lady”). Still, her home is just as chilling as it looks on camera.

“Set decoration barely touched that house. Which was terrifying,” Bailey, who plays environmental activist Kiara, said. Pankow echoed his co-star’s anxiety over the meant-to-be-haunting locale, saying, “Locations did great.”

Bailey even had her own hair-raising experience in the home during Outer Banks production. “In that house, there’s a video where I’m filming and I try to Snapchat my friend,” Bailey explained. “I was like, Hey, what’s up. I’m holding my flashlight and the second I start recording, my flashlight is cutting on and off. I was like, Bye! This is not happening. I am not okay with this!”

However, one of the absolute creepiest Outer Banks moments in the Crain House wasn't actually filmed in the Charleston area home. As “Parcel” reaches its crescendo, the Pogues head into Ms. Crain’s basement to try to find the Royal Merchant gold they believe is hidden down there (they are correct). It is a moment so claustrophobic you can practically smell the centuries-old must. Yet, the basement scene was shot entirely on a set. “The majority of our stuff is all on location. Besides that basement,” Bailey explained, with Daviss adding that the soundstage shoot was “fun!”

Yet, the cast’s fears always come back to the IRL Crain House, “There is a basement in the real house. And it looks kinda like the one in the show,” Daviss confirmed. “That basement does exist in that house.”

At this point, don't be surprised if the “Crain House” pops up in an inevitable AHS season 27 — it's certainly qualified.

Outer Banks season 1, episode 6, “Parcel 9” begins with John B being introduced to his new home, which is a strange scene as he is a Pogue and he will be living in a Kook household for now. Sarah’s father sets the boundaries and rules between John B and Sarah, which makes him naive; they are obviously going to sneak into each other’s room. When John B updates his crew, Kiara has a problem with Sarah still but John B isn’t interested, he wants to focus on the gold.

They all head to the Crain household, which is marked on the map; they all discuss how it is meant to be haunted and how Mrs Crain has killed people. John B and co. enter the basement of the house and it looks like a dead-end. Kiara blames the dead-end on Sarah but John B wonders if her frustration is born from the time that they kissed — Kiara slaps him.

But then Pope finds water! And then they find a hidden well. John B updates Sarah but she’s more concerned that Kiara is territorial. John B holds a meeting and all his friends are uncomfortable with Sarah but he declares that she is his girlfriend. Kiara tries to land John B in hot water, stating that he was initially using Sarah for information. John B agrees with that statement but that he wasn’t expecting “love”.

Kiara makes a shocking ultimatum — it’s her or Sarah. John B says both, so both women walk out.

Outer Banks season 1, episode 6, “Parcel 9” wants harmony in the group so he devises a plan where he traps both girls on a boat so they can reconcile and put aside their differences. Kiara and Sarah are frustrated by this plotting by John B. While both alone on a boat in the middle of a lake, Sarah gets stung by a jellyfish. Kiara gets out a spliff to help with the pain. The two then have a discussion and while high, Kiara asks Sarah why she ousted her. Sarah admits that when people get close to her, she feels trapped, and bails on them. Sarah apologizes to Kiara and says she misses her.

What happened to Mrs Crain Outer Banks

In a game-changing moment, Kiara asks Sarah not to Bail on John B and Sarah makes that promise. They then laugh together as Kiara admits to ringing the police on Sarah’s birthday party when she was ousted years ago.

Sarah and Kiara tell John B and the others that they are willing to work together so they head back to the well at night. Sarah and Kiara sneak into the house and power down the outside lights so the rest of the group can go inside. The boys throw down a rope and assist John B down the well. At first, John B freaks out at finding skull remains but then he believes he has found something.

Outer Banks season 1, episode 6, “Parcel 9” closes with Mrs. Crain waking up and attacking Sarah and Kiara. Meanwhile, John B thinks he has found the treasure. Sarah and Kiara alert the others so they start pulling John B out of the well. Mrs. Crain starts shooting aimlessly at them with a shotgun (she’s blind) and the entire crew manages to flee the house.

In the car, John B is covered in sewer mud but he shows everyone a piece of gold — everyone freaks out in excitement and chant “full kook”.

You can tell that more danger lurks around the corner and the celebrations are premature.

Does Mrs Crain catch them?

Throughout the Series Crain chased the Pogues through her house with a shotgun after they intruded in look of the Treasure. She failed at catching them however, as she is blind and very old.

Who is the old lady in Outer Banks Season 2?

Limbrey is played by 51-year-old actress Elizabeth Mitchell. You might recognize her as Juliet on ABC's Lost, or even as the snow queen on the fantasy series Once Upon A Time. Elizabeth has also been on the silver screen in films like The Santa Clause and The Purge: Election Year.

Where is the old lady's house in Outer Banks?

Lowndes Grove Tanneyhill Plantation, home of Sarah Cameron and her family, practically drips old Southern wealth. That's not exactly a surprise, given that, in Outer Banks, it's the previous home of the fictional Denmark Tanney, a former slave who discovered gold while captaining the Royal Merchant.
