As of January 1,1996, there are no exemptions from jury service. The Jury Division is located at: 360 Adams Street, Room 156, in the Supreme Court Building, in Brooklyn, NY. We are open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

JUROR QUALIFICATION

 

If You Are Not an American Citizen

If you are not an American citizen, your name will be removed from the rolls as soon as you provide the jury office with one of the following proofs:

  1. A photocopy of your Alien Registration Card (both sides)
  2. A photocopy of your Work Authorization Card
  3. A photocopy of your Visa
  4. A photocopy of your Passport

If You Are Not a Resident of Brooklyn

If you are not a resident of Brooklyn, your name will be removed from the rolls as soon as you provide the jury office with two of the following proofs:

  1. A photocopy of your latest utility bill showing your name and current address
  2. A photocopy of your current lease
  3. A photocopy of your voters registration card showing your current address

If you have been convicted of a felony, please submit your completed questionnaire, or juror summons, along with proof of your felony conviction, by email to [email protected] or by regular mail.

If you do not have proof of your felony conviction that occurred outside of New York State, you must contact that jurisdiction for proof.

How to Apply for a Postponement or Excusal

All applications for postponements must be submitted prior to the date of jury service. If the summons indicates that you have had a prior postponement, or that you were absent the last time you were called, it is important that you report for jury service on the date the summons indicates.

If you have had no prior postponements, and would like to automatically file for your first postponement now, you can apply by phone at 1-800-449-2819 or on the web at www.nyjuror.gov.

If you are requesting to be excused from jury service due to a language problem, you must appear in person on the date and time you are summoned. Further instructions will be given to you at the location where you are summoned.

Medical Conditions and Disability Accommodations

If you have a medical condition that prevents you from serving as a juror, please call 347-404-9904. You may download the form for your doctor to use.

If You are the Caregiver of a Child or an Elderly Person

If you are the main caregiver of your child or children under 14 years of age or an elderly person, you may request a postponement by returning your completed questionnaire or summons, along with a copy of the birth certificate of your youngest child, or a doctor's note stating the condition of the person being cared for and that you are the main caregiver of that person.

Unfortunately, if your summons or questionnaire is not filled out completely, it will not be possible to consider your application, and it will be returned to you.

Information on Payment for Jury Service

Jurors who are paid their salary during their entire jury service, will not be paid a jury fee by the state.

All companies with more than 10 employees must pay a stipend of at least $40 per juror for each of the first three days of jury service.

Jurors employed by companies with more than 10 employees who are not paid for jury service after the third day, will be paid by the state at the rate of $40 per day for each day they are not reimbursed.

Jurors employed by companies with 10 employees or less and are not paid for jury service, will be paid $40 a day everyday for each day of service.

Jurors are not paid by the state for their daily transportation costs.

All checks, if any, for jury service, will be mailed to you by the office of the state treasurer within six weeks after completion of your service.

How many times can you postpone jury duty in NY?

If the date your are summoned is inconvenient, the law allows you one postponement to an available jury term date of your choice within six months.
