What happens to Sara at the end of season 2?

Spoilers follow for the Season 2 Finale of Who Killed Sara? on Netflix, and this post contains references to sexual assault.

Now that we're two seasons into Who Killed Sara?, we must know who killed her, right? Wrong. But we're much closer to the truth than we were at the beginning of this harrowing journey through the underbelly of the rich and powerful Lazcano family, and one man's quest to avenge his sister's death and his wrongful prison conviction for it. What we have learned, after 18 episodes, can be summed up by this quote: "The Lazcanos... had nothing to do with it?" Marifer asks this, tearfully, when watching a bombshell video tape that reveals the truth about Sara, her father, and what happened to Marifer's mother.

The Lazcanos are guilty of a lot of things: the sex trafficking ring at their casino, and framing Alex for Sara's murder, for example. But did they kill Sara? It seems they did not. Did they kill Marifer and Clara's mother? Again, it seems they did not. Below, we dig into all that, and everything else we learned in Season Two (plus that unexpected twist in the final minutes of the finale).

Who was buried in Alex's backyard?

This Reddit fan theory was correct! Gotta hand it to the eagle-eyed audience members for calling this one. The skeleton that Alex dug up at the end of Season One was in fact Sara's biological father, Abel Martinez. He was also Marifer and Clara's father, and lived next door to Sara's mother. He was mentally ill and violent, and raped Sara's mother. Sara visited Abel in the mental institution, and he asks her to get cash to help him escape the institution. So she seduced Nicandro and talked him into letting her sell drugs for him, in order to get the money.

In the finale, we go back to the rainy night we'd only seen flashbacks of before. Sara is home alone after Alex, Chema, and Rodolfo inexplicably go to the gym at night. She turns on the camcorder and is filming her living room when all of a sudden, Abel appears, soaked from the rain. He demands money, and starts threatening her. She tells him she doesn't trust him because he lied; he didn't tell her that Marifer was her half-sister. We see flashbacks of Abel raping Sara's mother, and Abel tells Sara he killed Marifer's mother, Christina. Sara flees from Abel and calls Rodolfo, who has left his cell phone at home. Cesar picks up, and rushes over to Sara's house with his gun. He finds Abel strangling Sara and shoots him once through the skull, killing him.

Who killed Sara?

This is tricky. Here's what we know: Marifer thinks she killed Sara, because she cut the ropes that day at the lake. But in the last few minutes of the finale, we see Nicandro (Rodolfo's friend), flipping through some files. There's a photo of Dr. Alanis, the psychiatrist who treated Sara. Then a photo of Sara herself, with the caption "S.G. Project's First Patient." Earlier on, we see a brief flashback of Sara receiving electroconvulsive therapy, saying she doesn't want to be like her father. Nicandro says "The money's in your account. Just like my father promised." He congratulates the doctor on lying to Alex each time he came to his office, and says, "Nobody can know that it was really us." What?

So, Nicandro and his family seem to have conspired to kill Sara. Was it part of some kind of psychological experiment? Is there a bigger conspiracy at play here? Why did Nicandro, or his father, want her dead? All of this, and more, could be revealed in Season Three.
