What is Freyas accent on Bake Off?

Freya is having quite an impact on this year’s Great British Bake Off – and not just for her amazing vegan creations.

The Scarborough contestant – at 19, the youngest in the tent this year – created quite a stir in biscuit week, screened last night.

Mainly because of the way she said ‘cappuccino’.

It certainly had an impact on presenter Noel Fielding, as this clip, seen more than 20,000 times, makes clear:

We’re totally obsessed with Freya’s Cappuccino. #GBBO pic.twitter.com/0t7GKQpukB

And it seems to be having a similar impact on viewers. “I can’t stop copying her accent help,” tweeted villinelle.

“Oh I do love a Yorkshire accent,” said Joy Leng.

If you missed last night’s episode, you can watch it on catch-up here.

Her accent is from Yorkshire, a county in north England.

level 1

It's Yorkshire with a huge amount of vocal fry

level 2

i think the vocal fry makes her unbearable to watch.

level 2

I realise this is days upon days ago, but I'm just watching from the beginning and her voice is so irritating! I love most northern accents, but hers is ...not nice to my ears. The vocal fry is not cute.

level 1

I loooooove her way of speaking. Not just her accent, which is fantastic, but the funny things she says. She’s one of my early faves.

level 1

Being an American, I can't really help you, but I wanted to say I enjoy her accent! I've never heard anyone like her!

level 2

She's from Yorkshire, Northern England 😊

level 1

I loved how she said cappuccino

level 2

It was funny when Noel called her out on how many times she was saying the word cappuccino.

level 1

Her nasal intonation reminds me of valley girls

level 2

As an American listener and taking from others saying she's got a Yorkshire accent, I still can't tell if it's the accent that leads to her drawl or if it's just her being a teen.

level 2

Yes! She has pretty intense vocal fry.

level 2

That's what I compared it to! I said she sounds like the Valley Girl version of whatever accent she's got! She cracks me up!

level 2

That is exactly what I Thought.

I’m from Manchester and moved to America a while ago and when I was teaching kindergarten I was corrected on phonics so I didnt end up with ‘a class of 5 year olds with an english accent’ lol

I cant imagine what they’d do with Freya 😂

level 1

Are you sure she’s not an elf?

level 1

There is a girl on TikTok that has the same accent and tone of voice, it's really messing with me because I keep thinking it's her.

Freya sealed her place as a fan favourite in the second episode of The Great British Bake Off 2021.

During biscuit week viewers took a shine to the North Yorkshire baker's Yorkshire twang.

But not everyone was happy as Channel 4 also had to deal with a slew of complaints about the episode due to problems with the sound.

One viewer said: "Freya needs to narrate some audiobooks at once"

"Cappuccin-errr! Yes! We were commenting on it too."

"Loving Freya’s East Yorkshire take on Cappuccino. Wish I could describe the phonetics for that ending"

Paul told Freya she had 'a little too much coffee' in her brandy snaps after she revealed she had eight tablespoons of espresso (not 'expresso'...) in her bake.

But despite viewers appreciating Freya's bakes and her bants, many pointed out they were having problems with the sound.

Viewers streaming via All4 couldn't get access to subtitles and described problems with the voiceover being too quiet.

"What’s going on with the sound?! No acknowledgement of it whatsoever… so weird"

"Is anybody else having issues hearing the narration over the music… the sound is all over the place!"

"The sound is really odd on #GBBO this week. The commentary is barely audible."

The issues relate to a fire at a TV studio on Saturday which has caused problems for streaming service All4 as well as issues on Channel 4 stations like E4 and 4Music.

As one technically minded viewer put it: "Voiceovers on GBBO on C4 HD sound out of phase.

"Presumably this is due to lack of 5.1 processing whilst C4 still operating under DR conditions for playout from alternative facility, following Saturday’s incident."
