The all-new Volkswagen Tiguan is expected to hit showrooms in early 2016 with prices similar to the current model. From around £23,000, Volkswagen’s SUV takes the Golf’s credentials and adds a SUV levels of practicality, durability and that all-important high driving position.

You get a spacious interior, excellent build quality and a good specification regardless of the trim level you choose. There are, however, lots of other worthy rivals to take into consideration. To help you out, we’ve listed the top five Tiguan alternatives.

You can use our Volkswagen Tiguan configurator to see how much you could save off the current model.

Kia Sportage

What is similar to a VW Tiguan

Just a few years ago, it would have been hard to imagine pitting a Kia against the likes of Volkswagen – this is no longer the case. Kia’s Sportage has good looks and a generous standard specification. You’ll find cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity on even the most basic models. It has a good boot, too – 564 litres certainly puts it above the current Tiguan. We’ll have to wait for more details to find out if the new model fairs any better.

Although it can compete with more premium brands, the price doesn’t reflect this – the Sportage can be yours from £17,465. When you add Kia’s seven-year warranty into the mix along with the extra boot space, it proves to be great value for money.

Our Kia Sportage configurator can help you save even more if you think this is the SUV for you.

Nissan Qashqai

What is similar to a VW Tiguan

The Qashqai is one of the UK’s best selling cars for good reason – praised by critics for its refinement and ride quality, it doesn’t suffer from body lean like some SUVs do. This means despite its big car looks, it should handle just as well as any small hatchback.

Priced from £18,595, it undercuts the Tiguan by a significant margin – for the price of a basic Tiguan, you could have a Qashqai with a much higher spec. Interior quality is fantastic too, although rear visibility isn’t as good as some rivals. The boot isn’t as big as a Tiguan’s either, with only 430 litres on offer.

If you can see yourself in one, let our Nissan Qashqai configurator find you great deals direct from the UK’s leading Nissan dealers.

Skoda Yeti

What is similar to a VW Tiguan

The Skoda Yeti makes an interesting choice for an SUV – its quirky, boxy styling helps it stand out among the others in this list. If you aren’t particularly keen on the looks though, the Yeti’s build quality and range of frugal engines might be enough to change your mind. In four-wheel drive form, it’s great at dealing with mud or snow – something to bear in mind if this is one of the reasons for choosing an SUV.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine blends good economy with power meaning the Yeti makes 108hp and can achieving a healthy 55mpg. If you go for the smaller 1.6-litre engine you should manage over 60mpg and road tax bills will be smaller thanks to its lower emissions. Being a Skoda means the Yeti is in the Volkswagen Group family – the materials might not compete with those used in the all-new Tiguan, but build quality certainly will – at £17,000 the Yeti is certainly a cheaper alternative to consider.

Ford Kuga

What is similar to a VW Tiguan

Costing just under £21,000, the Kuga’s price is more on par with the Tiguan than some other rivals. It comes with a huge amount of standard kit with even basic models getting features such as Bluetooth, cruise control and a quick-clear heated windscreen. The four-wheel drive model has been praised for the improved grip it provides, improving both safety and ability in tough conditions.

There’s a good choice of petrol and diesel engines, but the Ecoboost petrol engine has been criticised for being a bit slow. The best bet would be the 2.0-litre diesel making 138hp and returning 60mpg. The interior is roomy but, perhaps, not as well-made as the Tiguan and some critics have said the controls aren’t the easiest to operate. Despite this, it costs £2,000 less than the cheapest Tiguan so it’s certainly worth consideration.

You could save even more by using our Ford Kuga configurator to get brilliant deals.

Range Rover Evoque

What is similar to a VW Tiguan

It could be said that the Range Rover Evoque isn’t in the same class as the Volkswagen, but the Tiguan’s restyle certainly gives it premium aspirations. Basic Evoques come with great standard specification including cruise control, parking sensors, electrically adjustable seats and a full leather interior. The use of leather and other fine materials will make sure it feels just as luxurious as it looks.

It’s worth remembering you’ll have to pay more for four-wheel drive version though, with the basic models coming in two-wheel-drive form – just like the new Tiguan. This doesn’t detract from performance though – all the petrols and diesels give a refined driving experience. Whether you think the prestige warrants the extra money is up to you, but if you’re considering a premium yet small SUV, this is possibly your best bet.
