What skin care was on Shark Tank?

Founder Alicia Scott launched the brand in 2018 because of how difficult it was to find the right shade and undertone for her skin. She says, “steeply punishing price points and sensitive skin triggering formulas were the only options.”

Amidst a lack of shades and thoughtless ingredients that inflamed her eczema and acne, she decided to create a solution that would not compromise the color, care, or condition of her skin.

In an episode of Shark Tank that aired on Feb. 25, investors Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary and Barbara Corcoran passed on the brand, but investor Lori Greiner and guest shark Emma Grede offered $150,000 for 20% equity.

Although Scott and operations manager Myisha Fantroy, also Scott’s cousin, came on the show pursuing $150,000 for 6% equity, they elected to take the deal in order to tap Greiner’s and Grede’s marketing and retail expertise.

Launched in 2018 by founder and CEO Ming Zhao, Proven Skincare currently sits at the core of the amalgam between AI and skincare products. CEO Ming Zhao worked together with a team of experts in AI and data science led by the inspiring Amy Yuan. Both Zhao and Yuan realized the struggles women over the world go through to find skincare products focused on treating their specific skin type and giving them a youthful complexion to boast.

In order to solve this age-old problem and to come up with a new, innovative product, Ming Zhao and Amy Yuan teamed together to create their own Artificial Intelligence skincare platform – the Skin Genome Project.

As part of the Skin Genome Project, both these women created a data-centric approach towards analyzing skin care products and finding their utility towards improving skin conditions. The project used computational science and data metrics to analyze the efficiency of more than 20,000 skincare ingredients. The project didn’t stop here; as it went on to analyze over 100,000 products and reviews from over 4,000 scientific journal articles and 8 million testimonials to create the right formulations.

AI beauty revolutionizes the way women view skincare products. For ages these products have used the ‘one size fits all’ strategy. However, this approach does not have the same utility anymore. With AI technology, Proven Skincare can develop custom cosmetic solutions to address the individual needs of all consumers. This ultimately delivers better results in a quicker time period.

Proven Skincare approached Shark Tank investors this year looking for a $500,000 investment in return for 5 percent equity. The small screen investors Mark Cuban, Anne Wojcicki, Kevin O Leary, Lori Greiner, and Daymond Johns heavily scrutinized the product idea, before deciding not to proceed with the investment.

All of the Sharks seemed unified on the stance that AI in skincare beauty has been a fluke. Most companies admit they have tons of data to increase the efficiency of their products, when in fact all they have is an excel spreadsheet.

While their idea got rejected, Zhao isn’t entirely negative about the company’s experience on the show and how it shapes future prospects. Despite the shark’s unwillingness to bite on the idea, Proven has recorded its highest website traffic and highest sales day ever recently.

Zhao spoke about their efforts on the show and mentioned, “In one show, millions of Americans have gotten to understand what Proven is, what personalization means and the possibilities of it. We’ve gotten positive feedback from social media and our own email list. The pitch made it so clear what we are doing, and it’s really helping us educate about what Proven is.”

Our Review of Proven Skincare

Proven Skin Care has distributed its products into three specific product lines; a personalized SPF day cream, a personalized night cream and a personalized cleanser. Proven Skincare creates a questionnaire to know more about the skin type and needs of every individual. Once you answer the questions and tell your specific skin type, the company will generate your own custom skincare product with ingredients suitable for you.

Products meant to increase hydration include ingredients such as squalenes, ceramides and marula oil. Similarly, there are other common ingredients used in products meant to perform other skincare roles, such as reduced pigmentation and increased skin glow.

Products sold by the Proven Skincare system remain efficient for two months. After the two month period is over, the AI system will take new factors into consideration like change of seasons, change in locations, improvement in skin type and pregnancy among many others, to create a new formula.

The system considers it best to renew your product formulation after every two months, so that newer ingredients and concentrations can be added to the mix. The system itself is simple, yet tons of data-related processes going at the backend account for the unique characteristics and skin types of all individuals.

You can use the Proven Skin Care routine through the simple cleanse and moisturize formula. If you have oily and acne prone skin, the brand suggests you cleanse your facial skin almost twice a day. However, others who have a normal skin type can cleanse once in the evening. The product should be allowed to sit for a minimum of 60 seconds before you rinse it away.

Pros

  • Made through a custom assessment of your skin type and concerns
  • 100 percent safe ingredients for use
  • Perfect for continuous application
  • Instant results
  • 100 percent cruelty free

Cons

  • No returns possible, because the products are formulated for your skin
  • Relatively new, which is why results cannot be tracked
  • Sold only on the brand’s website after you fill a quiz

Who is Proven Skincare For?

Proven skincare is for all women who are tired of finding a skincare product that understands their skin type and gives instant results. Products by Proven Skincare are formulated through an authentic assessment of every individual’s skin type.

Are There Any Alternatives?

AI in skincare is relatively new and Proven Skincare happens to be the premier of this technology. However, there are alternatives available for consumers. One such alternative is Formulyst, which helps people with natural flaws in their skin get an improved look through customized skincare formulas generated with the help of AI.

The creams marketed by Formulyst help generate a youthful look on your face through prior data-centered research. Proven Skincare is, however, a step above Formulyst because it develops customized formulas based on the answers users give on a questionnaire.
