The drama stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson, who portray the real-life Texas Ranger Frank Hamer and ex-partner Maney Gault as they attempt to track down and capture Bonnie and Clyde. The story is based on true events.

The focus is more on the partners than on Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow, said Executive Producer Michael Malone.

"The story chronicles Frank Hamer and Maney Gault's journey as they track Bonnie and Clyde across several state lines," Malone said in an interview. "This region of Louisiana offered a lot of landscapes that's correspondent to the film's story. So we're mostly in rural areas and highways and roads."

"The Highwaymen" also was filmed in Gibsland, in Bienville Parish — the original site where law-enforcement officers ambushed and shot to death the robbers in 1934.

The rural Louisiana areas were used to double as Oklahoma and Texas, as well, Malone said.

And this week, there are plans to capture shots of historic buildings and overall landscape of downtown Shreveport, Malone said.

"We do have one scene in downtown Shreveport that we'll be getting this week," Malone said.

"The downtown area has a great historical look, and that's what we're taking advantage of," he said. "The landscape downtown looks really great."

More than 200 cast and crew members traveled to northwest Louisiana for filming, he said.

The producer was hush-hush about details regarding Costner, Harrelson and other cast members' presence and activities while in town. But there have been whispers from locals who've said they've spotted Costner and others out and about.

Malone did say that the crew has enjoyed the area and its people.

"We love Shreveport. The crew's been having a blast," Malone said. "We've been enjoying the hospitality while filming this — and the natural beauty up here. It's been great."

The crews have visited restaurants and laundromats, and multiple hotels have been booked since they arrived, he said.

Filming of "The Highwaymen" began in February in south Louisiana and moved to northwest Louisiana earlier this month.

"The Highwaymen" is scheduled for release later this year. It was written by John Fusco, Scott Frank and John Lee Hancock. It's directed by Hancock and produced by Casey Silver Productions.

The cast also includes Academy Award winner Kathy Bates, John Carroll Lynch, Kim Dickens, Thomas Mann and William Sadler.
