I know when I was close to the drinking age I thought a lot about going on vacation and being able to buy a drink without my parents. Now that I am a parent I also think about my own children and whether or not they can enjoy an alcoholic beverage when they’re with me in Cancún.

Most countries have a legal drinking age, which is how old you need to be before you can buy or drink alcohol. The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18 and because Cancún is in Mexico that means you need to be 18 to buy a drink in Mexico.

However, if you are an American citizen, it’s always a good idea to bring your US identification to buy alcohol in Mexico. If you are not, then please bring your passport with you to buy alcohol. If you’re going to enjoy the nightlife we suggest going to busy bars and nightclubs where there are going to be a lot of people. One of the bonuses about going to a busy place is you’re going to be close to public transportation. Taxis are everywhere and pretty easy to procure. Let your designated sober person take the lead on finding transportation after you’ve been drinking.
